They just get used over the default icons in the gcfs, so you don't have to backup any files.

Technically not useless. if you read the rules for that polycount contest, it says the dead line is June 28th.  It also says that engineer buildings and items are welcome.  That means that some time between now and june 28th(or july 12th, when winners are announced), our Texan Friend gets his update.

So... what's Polycount anyways? The server crashed within 20 seconds of Valve posting that blog entry.

poly = polygon count I.E. how many little surfaces are formed by a models vertices.

The website itself appears to be a place to share custom made 3d models, some of which are from the TF2 contributors who got items in game.  Valve is exploiting the high number of modelers to generate more items for the contribute page.  Not a bad idea IMO.
