When applying AS5 I've always stayed away from 'a pea sized amount' and just put little itty-bitty dots EVERYWHAR, then mash the cooler on, and while pressing on it with an approximate amount of force equal to what the cooler retention mech. would apply, rotate it a little and really mash the compound in there good, then I take it off and check the distribution of it, if I like how evenly it spread and whatnot, I do the same and put the clips, screws, whatever in place.
Don't panic if the CPU comes out w/ the cooler when you remove it to check the spread of goo(oh god), it's happened to me *every time* on every CPU I've done this way. Also defrag cache files.... I haven't had any kind of FPS drop =/ |

HWMonitor should give the temps, works for me. Also, that's why you don't buy laptops for gaming, there's not really much you can do. Can't replace parts, can't really do much more for cooling, and you'll probably void any warranty you have trying to reapply paste in vain (and yes, it will be in vain), and that's if you don't break something in the process. You put more paste on it's not gonna make much of a difference, gaming rigs aren't supposed to fit in a fucking shoebox, afaik there has never been a gaming laptop that didn't overheat like a bitch when you tried to put it through its paces. Regardless, if you decide to put some new paste on it, gl. Hopefully that'll help out a lot. I'm curious to hear how it goes, and whether you see a big difference in temps afterwards or not. So I got the new thermal paste on, and it's currently at 10% load at 40 degrees according to HWMonitor and 47 according to Core Temp, much better from the 55 it idled at yesterday (Core Temp).
Time to test TF2 and my framerate to see if that fixed anything. |

Alright, my fps is back to 60 (which is better than last night) and my 4th core's max temp is 5 degrees lower (81 according to Core Temp, 76 on HWMonitor and SpeedFan, I'll assume this is the right temp). On average, my CPU was at about 65 in-game and my GPU sat just over 65.
Are these acceptable temperatures for a laptop? Keep in mind my room is nearly 30 degrees because we have no AC...

Something else to try is reformatting your entire C:\ drive. I recently did this and it stopped my random crashing and improved my frame rate.

Alright so my FPS is back to normal and my CPU temp hits about 71 max (only on full server), and AS5 takes like 200 hours to be fully broken in so I'd assume that'll only decrease more (since it's been about 20 hours max).
I get random lag spikes though, I'll post some netgraph screenshots when I get home. Basically the red bar shoots up for a split second and the value is in the 1000s. :-\ |

I think the lag is just part of the update, I get the same thing too and it's fucking miserable, never had it before the engy update
