Slightly on the same topic, I'd like to confirm/deny something, seeing how you're a local; I've heard that Canadians in general are still well received in the Netherlands even decades after WWII, true/false? I've heard some stories from a few mates that depending on the city, having a Canadian flag on the backpack can really change peoples moods for the better.

Well, it's not because of WWII but it shows that you're not from the US... While we don't really hate people from the US, there is a general annoyance with US citizens here because of the average attitude they have. For most Dutch people the difference between Canadian and US accents are too subtle to hear so the flag makes it easier to spot Canadians. But the flag isn't really needed and it looks kinda lame to show where you're from on your back imho.

If anyone ever will be passing through Amsterdam give me a signal and I'll see if I can give you a place to stay in my boat.

It's not uncommon for Americans to have a Canadian flag patch, hat, or shirt when traveling abroad. The general theory is that it's better to avoid fighting with people that hate America then having to defend the actions of our stupid politicians. Surprisingly, this seems to be more common in the past 8 years.

The thing is, we don't hate US citizens as much as we're annoyed with some attitudes they have. Overly patriotic Americans are annoying....

I'd do it.  I hate Bush with a passion and think Neocon are one of the most dangerous things in our country.  I also live in Florida and am from Ocala, where they still hate queers and minorities and have an active KKK chapter.  So I know me some neocons.

Speaking of world cup...I can't wait for 2010.  Being half-Italian I was on cloud nine when Italy won it all and in the fashion they did:  Great defense, awesome play making, the way they came out at the end to beat Germany and when it came down to PK where Italy is 0 for the century they managed to sink all their goals while France choked.

And seeing Zidane have a melt down and head butt Materazzi in the chest was the icing on the cake.  Kind of sucks to see such a great player end his career that way though.

Speaking of 2010...  Winter Olympics in Vancouver!  The hockey tournament is going to be insane, and I'm going to try my damndest to be there for it.  The tickets are going to be in such demand that they're basically raffling the opportunity to buy them, though.  My shit-ass luck better grant me some good graces or it's fired.

Oh, and a question to the boards.  From the international sounds of it, most people don't care about the Winter Olympics, almost refusing that it exists.  In Canada, it's on-par with the Summer games.  What about where you live?  What are your thoughts, and more importantly, what does your community generally think of 'em?

I remain of the opinion that separating the winter and summer games to different years was a boneheaded move that detracted from both.

I've heard that's the case for most of Europe. Probably because the flag means you're not an American. :p

HA! Thanks Surf. I couldn't find it. Anyhow, I'm currently living in Columbus, OH but I'll be moving wherever my job takes me (once I find something permanent). I'm hoping to find something out west in CA (preferably San Francisco or San Diego) but we'll see how that goes.

Also, I am looking for employment in Canada and planning on learning French to up my chances of becoming a Canadian citizen in the event that the upcoming election is stolen for the third time by the Republican neocons this November.
