I have a USB headphone mic combo from Microsoft (promotion thing, got it for free) but it doesn't seem to work with TF2. On the shift+tab settings screen, I only get a half a bar when testing and I hear nothing.

I just booted up Day of Defeat: Source and it worked fine for that, though.

Any ideas?

Audigy 2 ZS when I run sound through the speakers, but I am pretty sure the headphones use onboard sound.

just a heads up. Sometimes it doesn't switch to the headphones/mic when you plug it in so you have to set it manually. Just right click the volume icon and go to playback devices and select it and then go to the recording devices and do the same. I have a USB headset/mic and I noticed this so now I check before launching the game.

I got a similar problem, except my mic won't work at all, I just ran into this problem.
When i go into steam to test it, it doesnt deetect it at all and when I go into the recording devices it sees it and it is set to default , but when I talk into it, it does not work.
any tips?

trying adding this into your autoexec.cfg

voice_forcemicrecord 0

(if you don't have an autoexec, Google "Source autoexec.cfg")

This fixed my mic issues in Source with my old Audigy2 ZS Plat Pro.
