Duck's 2nd 15-minute Budget Build:

The motherboard:GIGABYTE ATX Motherboard$95

The Processor:AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Brisbane 2.7GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache$77

The Ram:Crucial Ballistix Tracer 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800$60 ($20 w/ rebate)

The Power Supply:Thermaltake 500W ATX$60 (40 w/ rebate)

edit: THE DVD DRIVE!I'm a generic OEM DVD Burner (SATA, IDE cables are a bitch)$32

The Video CardEVGA GeForce 8800GTS SSC 640MB PCI Express x16$208 ($178 w/ rebates)

There, a $532 (w/ rebates $472) rig (minus the HDD and case) in 15 minutes, and I guarantee you it'll run your games pretty nicely. I made a new one because Geoff pointed out that most of the parts for the old one were deactivated. Sad Nice thing about this one is the 8800GTS (they're getting to be quite affordable) and the mobo that supports SLI.

Any questions or suggestions, feel free!

Case 1A Rosewill$35

Case 2A Lian-Li$100

Alt Power SupplySilverstone 650W$130 ($100 w/ rebates)

These are suggestion parts. If you've got a lot of hard drives, or you plan on adding an extra video card at some point, go with a bigger power supply, you'll thank yourself later. I tried suggesting a cheap case, as well as a nice one. I prefer nice cases, and I have a Lian-Li right now, it's pretty nice as far as I'm concerned. If you want lights and shit, go to http://www.xoxide.com, they've got the kind of shit you're looking for, ya faggots. They also have a nice selection of component cooling parts, like ram, hdd, cpu, and video card coolers, water-cooled, convection cooled, fin-cooled, etc etc etc

Duck's 15-minute Rig, Dirty Canuck Edishuns!!!  (Mostly for Scotty, but feel free)

For scotty: I suggested a mid and higher-end for both the CPU and motherboard. The only big difference for the motherboards is that one can run two Nvidia cards in SLI, should you choose to do that at some point (you'll need a bigger power supply than what you've got right now though Sad) If you've got more questions, feel free to ask. Of course, these suggestions will be moot in a few weeks, especially for the video cards. Feel free to ask if you've got questions, and if FlyingMongoose says differently, I would say go with what he says, he does this kind of thing for a living ;D

RAMCorsair 2 GB PC2-6400 (DDR2 800) 75 moose nickels (50 w/ rebates)

CPUIntel 2.0 GHz 800FSB 100 moose nickels

CPUIntel 2.53 GHz 1066FSB170 moose nickels

VideocardEVGA 8800GT170 moose nickels (150 w/ rebates)

Mobo1Asus ATX 2xPCI-E16 SLI-ready161 moose nickels

Mobo2Asus ATX 1xPCI-E16 no-sli100 moose nickels

Power SupplySilverstone 500W83 moose nickels

DVD BurnerLG DVD+RW Burner
32 moose nickels

CaseGeneric Coolermaster48 moose nickels

So for scotty, that's like - what - 470 moose nickels for the nicer cpu, less nice motherboard, 2GB of RAM, and fancy 8800GT. Though I would suggest taking me up on my offer for the 6800XT until you can save up for an 8800GTS if I were you  Tongue

Also, that's a lot of moose nickels.  :o :o :o :o

As a few people did ask, I wound up getting the above three parts, in addition to a graphics card that Duck is very graciously providing. Hopefully by the end of next week I'll be all up and running. Smile

Radeon HD 4850 or its basic equal 9800 GTX are the biggest boners these days. (both ~$199)

I want to put together a computer, prolly not going to be for a little while but, if someone could look over this build and first: tell me if it would work, and second: give me suggestions for anything i may be missing such as cables and stuff.

Case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6811146041
Mobo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6813138102
RAM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6820231098
GPU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6814143118
CPU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6819103773
HDD's http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6822136055 2 of these in a RAID 0
PSU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6817226007
Optical Drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6827151171
Case Fan http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6811999138 Going to replace the blue side fan on the case cause i like red better
CPU Fan http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6835186019

Also, what is thermal grease, and do you think i should pick up a CPU cooler?
My biggest worry is that i wont have enough cables to go to everything and/or they wont be long enough
This would be my first build and i would be very grateful if someone would go over everything and make sure it is compatible, i have checked everything but i am a noobie as far as putting the computer together goes.
it would be much easier to just link my newegg wishlist, but i cant get it to work public.
I thank everyone in advance!

Everything is compatible as far as I can tell.
Thermal grease is the stuff you put between the processor and the heatsink (on top of the processor). It pulls the heat out of the CPU and the heatsink pulls the heat out of the thermal grease. The better the thermal grease/heatsink/fan, the better.
I'd highly recommend you got a cpu fan and a tube of thermal paste, you'll get much better cooling from an aftermarket fan than a stock one.
Just make sure that the cpu fan is the same socket type (AM2) as your motherboard's.

All in all, I would say your system would certainly work our just fine. Could you do better for the same budget? I don't know, prices change everyday. Without more info on what your budget is and what kind of games you're hoping to play, it's tough to answer any of your questions.

I would say swap the WD's for Seagate's. I've had better luck with Seagate, and they have a better warranty (5yr instead of 3yr).

Never heard of Sigma, and there's no customer reviews on your PSU. Other reviews of Sigma PSU's suggest the manufacturer misses simple things like making the cables long enough for ATX cases, but I wouldn't know from experience. Might try buying from someone else, but that's your call. You're also not water cooling or running anything ridiculous in terms of power consumption, so 800W is probably a bit much, but if the PSU does work out for you at least it'll basically be future proof. ;D

What OS are you going to be running? Vista, XP, 32-bit or 64-bit, etc? 2GB of ram is nice, but 4GB is nicer, but that's a judgment call to be made by you. It all depends on what kind of programs you run, how much memory they eat, etc etc etc. I run a lot of CAD/CAM FEA, etc so I need as much ram as I can get. Sad

Given how the prices have come down so much, and the newest and greatest cards out there are sub $200, I would say save up a bit and then spring for:

If you go with a new CPU cooler, make sure you don't put too much paste. It's a fairly common n00b mistake, and it's every bit as bad as not putting enough.

Good luck, and I'm interested to see what you finally decide on. ;D

What's the performance difference between the 4850 and the 4870, considering one's $100 more?

Honestly, dunno, 4850's the budget version, so maybe it's the same as an 8800GT vs an 8800GTS?

Should I get a 4870 now and wait to Crossfire it later, or should I get two 4850s for $100 more?

edit: I'm planning to build a new computer (not the one I'm putting a new card in) like either next spring or next fall.

Well then why don't you stfu until you see the prices then you dumbass? Prices on video cards fluctuate a lot, I can't believe you'd ask for someone to tell you what to do now at least 6 months before you build your rig.

thanks guys, my budget is around 1000 dollars, and i have apparently succeeded in building one, if i could link my newegg wish list the entire build would be shown. I have another set of the 2x1GB sticks in my current computer, i would prolly pull them out for the 4gigs. im prolly gonna use a university copy of either xp or vista. they aren't 64 bit but i dont really wanna spend money on them. right now i wont be playing many advanced games but i am running on an old P4 desktop and there is no room for upgrades. i kinda wanna play UT3 at some time though.

I have always had WD, i guess that is just my preference, my WDC has been a "trooper." i have done a lot of deep hard drive shit to it and it is still very nice. I just wish that they made the new Velociraptor 1000 rpm sata 3.0 gb/s in a lower size.

I guess i just want a decent platform that is going to be upgradable in the future.
My current rig  is a P4 3.0 Ghz and a 128mb Radeon X300
A lot of this is going to be the learning experience for me, i am going to be majoring somewhere in the IT field and i feel i need to know how to build a computer.

Good luck, and I'm interested to see what you finally decide on. ;D

From what I remember from the apple debacle with this same problem the thermal paste is used to make sure there is 100% contact between the heatsink and the processor.  Like with metal on metal (or whatever the top of the chip is) there is bound to be gaps or little pits that are too small to see etc.  So the paste makes everything touch each other.  But the paste itself is not a good heatsink, its just to maintain contact.  The heatsink is what does the real work and if you put too much paste on the paste will get in the way and slow things down.

I'm sure duck knows this but you probably didn't.  So now you know, that's why you need to be careful and apply it right.  Just follow the directions and it should be fine.
