I disagree again! I liked it as well, thought it was pretty sweet. Though I do feel he's kind of getting worse as he goes along, this one was a strange peak.

I subscribe to the alternate hits and misses theory. Reservoir Dogs is fucking overrated, Pulp Fiction was a masterpiece, Jackie Brown was a low point, Kill Bill Volume One was magnificent, Volume Two a bit of a let down, Death Proof was genius (this theory completely discounts any of Tarantino's work outside of discreet feature films and I know he counts Kill Bill as one film and still intends to release it as such you smart-arse cunts).

As an aside, I also apply this notion to Shyamalan's work, even numbers being hits.

All this said, I would still contend that even Tarantino's misses are extremely good films.

Shyamalan's a fucking failure, he knows how to set the pins up he has never known how to knock them down.  He is worse than the writers at Lost.

The only thing he did that was good was the sixth sense.  That actually had a good twist, a good ending.  Although looking back on it, it was probably an accident.

To me there is nothing worse than someone with talent but no sense in actually using it.  I end up hating their stuff more than people who fail because they stupid as shit and have no talent.  See: wanted - the comic book.


Also the problem with Reservoir Dogs is everyone raves about it.  What makes it so awesome is the subtlety.  There are plenty of movies like that, that are absolute masterpieces but are so subtle you will miss it if you are constantly thinking about how much you are supposed to like it.  I mean what makes it great are those little scenes that show these people bonding and coming together even though they aren't even supposed to know each others names.  Then viciously being ripped apart by suspicion.  I mean the tension created by Mr. White completely going to bat for Mr. Orange and protecting him when you know that he is the plant but he doesn't.  Then the scene where he finds out.  I mean holy shit.  You just have to sit back and let that kind of stuff take hold of you.

Unbreakable just appealed hugely to my aesthetic tendancies. The Villiage just had a very endearing vibe, to me anyway. The twist was ridiculous but kind of felt right in the film. I am looking forward to The Happening.

I also really like Richard Linklater and Wes Anderson movies.  Both do basically the same thing as RD, which is create a movie that is great not becuase of what happens but who it happens to.  They are character driven instead of plot driven.  I think most people call them character studies.  When done right they make for an amazing movie, but you can't be over-hyped you just got to let it happen to you.

Wes Anderson treads a dangerously thin line next pretentious wank. I couldn't really say I've particularly enjoyed any of his films except for The Darjeeling Limited and, even then, on a purely aesthetic level.

I do understand your point entirely, though. A History Of Violence is one of my favourite films but I seem to be very much in the minority due to people expecting an action film and getting an intense character study into a very interesting group of personas. The same thing happened with Zodiac last year - absolutely outstanding and intense study of three very different investigators gets billed as "FROM THE DIRECTOR OF SE7EN AND FIGHTCLUB" and people go in expecting a slasher flick.

Seriously dude, watch it. Most of the film is meditative inspection of the characters and even the murders themselves are handled in a very understated manner (or at least as subtle as Fincher can manage  )
