Nothing to see here, folks. Won't these black holes be formed in a vacuum chamber anyways? What matter is there to be absorbed?

People thought that blowing up the first atomic bomb would light the Earth's atmosphere on fire and consume the whole planet.  Did it happen?

Why do I have the distinct feeling I've missed a core scientific principle?

Is it photons I'm not accounting for?

Black Holes can absorb even light, or so I hear.

Anything you've heard about Black Holes is very much based on theory. In fact, most Chemistry is based on theory and not scientific law. So put away your crowbars and sing Kum-ba-yah.

Yes, black holes are black for a reason.  No, they don't 'absorb' light, electromagnetic radiation just doesn't escape across the horizon of the super massive object.  No, vacuum chambers aren't ideal vacuums, even in the best vacuum chambers on earth there is still plenty in there.

As soon as you start talking about black holes, you go from an area that science fiction would like to greatly overly simplify to a very ambiguous scientific topic.  The truth is without a quantum mechanic explanation for gravitation you can't really explain exactly what is going on in there.  If you go with general relativity the best way to look at is, fuck it, i'm not typing this out, go to school.  This is where the quest for the Higgs boson and the LHC come in, which is what leads to all the black hole hatching craziness.

Lol. How can you study physics and not want to teach? It seems like everyone here studies it with the intent to become a professor and do research

edit: Not that the people here studying physics want to teach I guess. More like teaching is one of the only ways left that allows you can do research for a career

Interesting I thought that black holes were what had physicists looking for the "light particle", guess I'm operating on dated material.  That's what I get for reading things in a completely random fashion.
