Should I get a 4870 now and wait to Crossfire it later, or should I get two 4850s for $100 more?

edit: I'm planning to build a new computer (not the one I'm putting a new card in) like either next spring or next fall.

Well then why don't you stfu until you see the prices then you dumbass? Prices on video cards fluctuate a lot, I can't believe you'd ask for someone to tell you what to do now at least 6 months before you build your rig.

duck I meant when I get home in like 8-9 days, and I'm gonna put it/them in my current comp. Tongue

Those cards already run pretty fucking hot. And from Jorge's link earlier, the 4870 doesn't seem THAT much better than the 4850. I'd say 4850's now, you can always sell them or stuffs later.

Which of these 2 mobo's do you think I should pick up?

Asus M3N-HD HDMI

or

Asus M2N32-SLI

I put the M2N32-SLI on a wish list from a suggestion, the M3N-HD seems to have all I need as well along with HDMI for when I eventually get an lcd hdtv.  What do you think?

what means more to you, the HD capability or the SLI capability?

I was hoping SLI would work for both boards, but that's not the case right?  And DVI can hook up to HDTVs anyway can't they?  I thought I might save a few bucks with the HDMI board but I might stick with the SLI anyway.

yes most HDTV's have DVI inputs
you can always get a HDMI PCI card or something on the SLI board

For people in the $1500-$2000 range, Newegg is having some sort of promotion type deal going on where they challenged two guys to build the best gaming PC for <$2000

So Newegg sent me coupon codes and shit today in their weekly newsletter, and I saw some great deals. Furthermore, I realized that they practically handed me the parts-list to a brand new gaming rig, so I put one together from the newsletter. Nearly every single part is cheaper with a coupon code, the only two parts I had to dig for were a DVD-burner and a motherboard. I mean c'mon people, this shit is cheap and FAST, if you've got some monies and you still don't have a good gaming rig, there's no reason not to put one together. If you don't get coupon codes, sign up for their weekly newsletter already, or ask me and I can hook you up  Big Grin

The motherboard:GIGABYTE AM2 nForce 570 SLIATX$95
$528, $648 if you run 2 cards in SLI. Damn that's cheap!  8) 8) 8)

Just bump it when you want a rig suggestion, someone (ie me) will remember to build a rig.

I'm tempted to get the 8800GT for that cheap Duck. Would be a nice upgrade comapred to my current graphics card, that's for sure.
Total Cost$655 after rebates

The ram you had will do, though like you said, 4GB is better. The case is expensive, but I pop boners for Lian-Li, so it was an easy suggestion from me. You could definitely go with something cheaper if you need to, this is obviously the least critical part of your system.

For the GPU, I went with a 4850 because Tom's Hardware suggests that the 4850's are the best card for your money in that price range. Went with that particular card because the 4850's definitely run hot: this card has some monster cooling on it though, so hopefully you'll get better, more stable performance from it, as well as MSI's 2-year warranty.

The motherboard is one of the FEW (I saw 2 from Asus) crossfire motherboards available, and it's the only one that's new. Nevertheless, it leaves ample room between both PCI-ex16 slots so even though you have a dual slot card, you'll definitely have space should you ever decide you need another.

Also went with the e8400 as per the suggestion of Tom's Hardware. If this is a bit too rich for your blood, there are definitely things that can be tweaked, but keep in mind I built this rig with the intention of giving you an affordable rig with room for expandability.

Any questions or problems, let me know. Smile

edit: man I really wanna build a new rig again

edit: Also, obviously the rebates on parts will expire, but even then, I stand by the manufacturers I've recommended here. They all have fantastic reputations and with such an investment, I wouldn't trust anything less.

I'm going to research the hell out of this thread.  I've a budget of $2k and MassShadow has irked me for the last fucking time.  Its time on this earth is drawing to a close.

Addendum:
This is the first time I put one together myself.  Current and last PC, only two I ever owned, were OEMs.  I have mild confidence I can plug stuff in and screw stuff on, but I'm worried about the choices I'm going to make for motherboard and processor, and of course video card.  I know quad cores are the rage now, but AMD and Intel have different ways of doing it, don't they?

I know I want a nice RAID.  I want a contiguous terrabyte somewhere.  I have offline storage for things I don't want to lose.  I've been lucky with a zero failure rate on HDs but I know that hourglass is running out.

Monitors are already covered.  I <3 what I have.

Anyways, I'm gonna try to compare all suggestions for each component on a spreadsheet.  I don't know what the use-by dating is on these suggestions, though. Big Grin

The turnaround is pretty quick. Most of these rigs are not worth it, many parts aren't even available anymore. If you're lucky the latest 2 would still be applicable (more likely just the latest one though).

Wow $2k will get you a beast if you don't need a monitor.

Friend is looking to build a machine that basically will run TF2 and Left 4 Dead when it comes out and nothing more.  Would need a case and HDD but not a monitor or anything.  Doable for < $500?  I saw the budget builds at the beginning from May, but assumed they're probably outdated now.
