How much does it cost in gas to get in a good session of wake-boarding?  Now, for full disclosure, I used to love to knee-board, but always preferred to surf or body-board, but this was before gas (dave, that's petrol for you) was like fucking expensive.

I'm a member of the National Rifle Association, but I'm not republican (not democrat either...I'm registered as unaffiliated).

DC v Heller is sort of funny...the supreme court ruled that the districts ban on handguns was unconstitutional...so then they changed the law to make it so that it's technically possible to get a handgun (although they still banned anything that could hold more than 12 rounds...which is pretty much everything shy of revolvers and derringers...). But the day it became legal, Dick Heller (the "Heller" in DC v Heller) went to apply for a permit and was dennied....so...he's suing again. But Congress may vote to change the law in DC before the case is heard anyways.

As far as wake boarding goes, I don't do it all that much and I don't have to pay for the gas when I do since it's my friends jet ski that we use...but it only costs $50 to fill it up and that usually lasts a good 10 hours...

I'm a member of the NRA because I support the right to keep and bear arms. It's a single interest group (or at least it's supposed to be). I'm really a libertarian at heart, I believe in individual rights over all else. In fact, I tried to register as libertarian, but they told me at the board of elections that if I checked off "libertarian" then they would just register me as unaffiliated since the party isn't technically large enough in this state (and I said, well how can it be if you won't let people register as one....but that's beside the point).

I think someone is still mad that our regulated militias did some damage in that little skirmish we had back in the 1700's.  you would love it if we just tossed all our guns away so the British can just stroll back in... wouldn't you

Actually I'm just fucked off that your gun culture is starting to spill over here. I would like to think we live in a slightly more civilised world than that of two hundred years ago and the "right to shoot each other" is kind of antiquated. I guess it's part of your "culture" though and the best defence against gun-crime is obviously to make sure everyone is armed to the teeth.

Actually it's more like your gun culture spilled over here and you gave up on it for a while....so technically it's just your gun culture resurecting in your own country...The very idea of having a mass armed population came from England. England’s Bill of Rights of 1689 guaranteed “[t]hat the Subjects, which are Protestants, may have Arms for their Defence, suitable to their conditions, as allowed by law.” Which was reaffirmed almost a century later, in the
aftermath of the anti-Catholic Gordon riots of 1780, when the Recorder of London, who was the foremost legal advisor to the city as well as the chief judge of the Old Bailey, gave the following opinion on the legality of private organizations armed for defense against rioters:

The right of His majesty’s Protestant subjects, to have arms for
their own defence, and to use them for lawful purposes, is most
clear and undeniable. It seems, indeed, to be considered, by the
ancient laws of the Kingdom, not only as a right, but as a duty;
for all the subjects of the realm, who are able to bear arms, are
bound to be ready, at all times, to assist the sheriff, and other
civil magistrates, in the execution of the laws and the
preservation of the public peace. And that right which every
Protestant most unquestionably possesses, individually, may, and
in many cases must, be exercised collectively, is likewise a point

This idea is what led individual states in the US to add the right to keep and bear arms in their individual constitutions and subsequently led to the Amendment to the US Constitution protecting the right to keep and bear arms. It's a little known fact that currently in the US, if you are a male between the ages of 17 and 45, you are considered a member of the unorganized militia which can be called up at any time by the president (which is also a means for justification of the draft, which all males still have to register for within 30 days of their 18th birthday). But I'm sure you don't think that an armed society is still neccesary considering we have a standing army. On the other hand, the entire reason the NRA was formed back in 1871 was because of the lack of marksmanship in Union Troops during the American Civil War. The NRA was actually founded by Union veterans Col. William C. Church and Gen. George Wingate because they thought the reason the American Civil War lasted so long was that since firearms were so prevelant in the South, when the men went to join the Army or Militia they were already knowledgable. This idea was also accepted by Ulysses S. Grant, who became on of the NRA's first presidents (after he was out of office as president of the US). As recently as WWII our large armed society has prevented the US from attack as evidenced by Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, who said, "You cannot invade the mainland United States. There would be a rifle behind each blade of grass."
