I'd like to take this moment to thank all the real estate brokers who contributed to unsafe lending practices and the housing bubble.

Thanks, Surf.

Something is misleading about this.  I mean, Libya and Qatar have more money than the U.K doesn't mean their going to become economic juggernauts anytime soon.  I'm assuming its just because they have a whole lot less to spend on infrastructure and other goverment plans.

China's surprlus is quite impressive though.

It's all about debt leveraging.  Proper debt leveraging can make you grow much faster, but you have a lot more risk especially when things go bad.  Also a lot of these really wealthy countries have the governments themselves participating in financial markets and other money making endeavors.

It would be easiest to explain with an example.  Lets say you can make 20% on up to $1 million in investment.  You can only afford $100,000 of your own money.  So you invest it and make $20,000 which is 20%.  No lets take an oversimplified loan - you can borrow $900,000 to pay back all at once at 10%.  So now you invest $1 mil.  You make $200,000, then you pay the interest of $90,000 out of that.  You still have $110,000!  Holy shit you just made 110% profit on an investment that earns 20%!  That's debt leveraging.  But let's say there is also a chance you can lose 5%.  Doesn't sound so bad with just your money you lose $5,000 but still have $95,000.  But if you took that loan you lose the $5,000 plus the $90,000 interest and another $45,000 on the money you borrowed you have to pay back.  Holy shit!  You just lost more money than you have!  Time to declare bankruptcy.

I'm assuming that in a much more complicated way it works the same for government.  They borrow a shit-ton of money so that hopefully their citizens have things like better roads, lower taxes, and sweet relations with China and places so they don't have much in the way of tariffs.  Now theoretically they can make a lot more money and therefore pay more taxes.  The big hangup is when you spend all your money on things that don't help your citizens like wars and give-aways to other countries.  It's a good thing no one is dumb enough to....oh shit.

Actually if you would have read my long series of blahs you'd realize the important thing here.  In a normal market people can't pay no big deal.  Seriously.  Just go and sell it.  Most people are 10-20% invested in their houses.  That's a decent cushion for a bank to sell at a discount to get rid of it quickly.  Plus most houses will have gone up in value since the loan, chances are the dumb homeowner will even get some money back (they get what's left after everyone else get what they are owed).  Except since people are so highly leveraged in their houses when prices go down, even a small amount, they are in serious trouble.  And so is the bank.  And the investors that bought a share of the mortgage.  Etc.

What's worse is that the people that aren't dumb still have most of their savings in their house.  Suddenly they hear all of that is gone.  They freak out and stop buying things.  Then people don't have as much to do because people aren't buying things, so they lose their jobs.  Then more houses go on the market prices fall more, and so on.  If those home prices were stabalized or even went up almost everything that is going on will magically go away.

If our government was bright they'd buy up all the "troubled" assets at a huge discount.  Then they'd force the banks to loan at a decent rate to qualified buyers (not investors) for 6 months guaranteed by the gov't.  Then everyone that wants a house can buy it at these great prices, the real problem now is no bank will lend to anyone but Jesus.  Now all those troubled assets are worth something because like I said, they can just sell the house if they have to.  Use that money to finance the guarantees.  Use the extra to pay down the debt and strengthen the dollar.

There I just solved the crisis where do I get my check?

Its a little bit more complex than that and government fiscal policy is no always a good solution, but that is a discussion for another thread

True, it is very much oversimplifying.  Also I doubt many people care.  It's just this is literally the conversation I have every day because my job is dependent on this, and it also effect my dad and grandpa but in different ways.
