"Your Resume" OR "What kind of jobs have you worked?" topic

Thought it would be interesting to post a topic to see what kind of jobs, terrible or great, we all had to have dealt with in order to "pay the bills".

I, myself, have had quite the extensive job list:

1998-2002:  Camera man for the high school basketball team.  20$ a game.  Pretty easy first job.  Sit in the "Crows nest" and point the camera at the game when it starts.  And since my brother played I would have been at the games anyways.

1999-2000:  Dishwasher at a country club.  $5.25 an hour.  Got to drive a golf cart around during my free time and cook my own meals whenever I was hungry.

2000-2001:  Shopping cart boy at local grocery store.  $5.25 an hour.  Not much to say here except it was good people watching experience?  Plus I got some free stuff, including a case of beer, when people forgot to take things out of their carts.

2001-2002:  Computer Tech assistant at local High school.  $5.25 an hour.  Pretty sweet job.  It was part of a work/study thing at my high school so I left school at noon and went to our rival high school and got to work on computers.  It was there that I learned how to build my own and other computer related skills.

2002-2003:  Cameraman for college basketball team.  $8 an hour.  Another decent job I had, I got into all the college games for free and since I put in my own times I got to throw in some extra hours.

May 2003-August 2003/June 2004-Oct 2004/May 2005-August 2005/April 2007-Sept 2007:  Casual Mail Carrier.  $13 an hour.  Was a nice job to do during the summer.  Got to be outside and didn't really have any customers or bosses to deal with.

August to October 2005:  Worked Valet at Casino.  $5.15 an hour plus tips.  Got fired because a guest took their keys with them when they left their car to get parked.
             
November 2005 to April 2007:  Toner Cartridge Technician.  $5.25 an hour.  Terrible job.  You worked in a small brick room with no windows under a desk lamp taking apart printer cartridges and refurbishing (spelling?) them. 

Nomber 2007 to March 2008:  Office Assistant for a Law Firm.  $10 an hour.  Yeah I think some of you remember this job.

May 2008 to Present:  Temporary Mail Carrier.  $20.50 an hour. 

And thats about it.

1994-2004: Worked in my dad's family auto-repair shop. Lots of interesting experiences to say the least.

2005-2008: Worked front desk at my dorm (basically reception)

Summer 1998 (13 years old): "Gate Checker" at the local pool.  We sat at a table and made sure that people who came in had their membership tags on them.

Summers 1999-2000 (14-15): Swim lesson aide

Summers 2001-2003 (16-18): Swim lesson instructor

School year 2002-2003 (17-18): Worked at a cheesesteak shop.

Summers 2004-2005 (19-20): Swim lesson instructor + lifeguard

School year 2006 (21): Mac computer lab attendant (ie. sit in a room and do my homework and sometimes play WoW)

Summer 2006 (21): Pool manager

2007-Now (22-23): Trial/Jury consulting

Sometime in HS:
          Computer technician at a computer repair store.

Sometime in College:
          PA for a TV show I will not name for one summer.  This was for no other reason than to be able to afford being in LA and it backfired because I was only able to afford to work

          Library assistant for UF Library West.  Easy college job they worked around your hours.  Lib west was being renovated so I just handled ordering and handing out books from storage.

Post college - Now:
          Commercial Appraiser.  I write long reports on commission for banks and owners who want to know what to put their property on the market for.  It's like still being in business school.

2000: Waiter. I hated this job. Worst of all I worked for my parents so I couldn't even get away from a bosses at the end of the day. Only lasted a few months before I quit.

2000 - 2003: Janitor. Cleaned my parent bowling alley before it opened. Not as bad because I didn't actually work with my parents.

2003 - 2004: Telemarketer. Not a bad job if you don't mind being universally despised. The insurance agency I worked for was pretty laid back so I didn't mind.

2004 - 2006: Software Developer/IT Tech. A work-study position. Fun and educational but I could only work a maximum of 20hrs/wk.

2006 - 2007: Software Developer. Worked for a small company that did contract work. Pay was terrible, there were no benefits, and the company was just ran very poorly in general. I was laid off after we lost our biggest contract.

2007 - 2008: Contractor. Did a few contracts through Robert Half. More software development.

Present: My last contract turned to full-time employment. I now work for a company that offers after-market car warranties. Not a bad job but I don't think I'll still be here in a few years.

Highschool: Worked at a local greenhouse, then worked at the local cheese outlet store. Our town had a cheese factory and I worked at the outlet, just cutting it up, packaging it for sale, selling it, etc. Best job EVAR because it was a super small town, less than 10 customers a DAY, worked alone, absolutely ZERO work to do, free cheese/drinks/candy, set my own work pace. Just as I left, the business went bankrupt (the store didn't make enough money per day to pay one employee, let alone the three that took turns there).

2002: I graduated. I moved to the city, and worked two jobs at once; worked for a clothing store called Cotton Ginny, and worked at a party supply store called Let's Celebrate. Clothing store was fine, good people, fairly slack since we were a store not many people liked. Party store... was totally awesome. I had to dress up every day around halloween (scared the shit out of a girl with a fear of masks) and got to do all kinds of retarded shit. It was the funnest job ever.

I had to leave both of these jobs because both of those companies also went bankrupt... the party store died for the second time, and the clothing store has since come back under new management.

2003-ish: Worked for Winners. Worst job ever. That store is retarded and our boss was, too; I was expected to unpack and stock three 7-foot pallets of individually boxed product EVERY MORNING, ALONE, while also helping the thousands of customers we had, doing layaway, covering everyone else's breaks, taking my OWN breaks, carrying out, and helping clean up in the fitting room because there were too overwhelmed and there was a four foot stack of clothes that needed to be put away by one person.
I would constantly get in trouble for not being able to do all that work, so in the end I just told them to shove it.

2003 - 2004-ish: Worked maybe fifty feet from Winners at the A&B sound store instead. That was initially a cool job. They sold CD's, movies, car audio stuff, computers, etc. I worked in the music department. In the end I ended up doing all the work while my three co-workers, who were all best friends, stood around talking about their stupid band. I did EVERYTHING around there and when our boss came, they apparently told her that I did zero. I would run out of work to do because it was all finished and ask what other things I could do, since I was still a noob and there was no training for me; they would just tell me to "figure it out".

I got laid off from this job on New Year's eve. Worst fucking New Year's ever. I got smashed. This company also went out of business like a year or two after i left.

2004-ish: Worked for Convergys. I was a call center agent, taking calls from American FedEx customers. In the beginning I simply worked regular shifts, taking regular domestic calls. Then I was promoted to the international department, which was nicer; I got more free training, less calls, and better hours. Then I was promoted to manager on duty, which was also sweet; half my day each day was spent not taking calls and instead taking chat requests from my fellow workers for assistance with their jobs. (My co-workers... were fucking retarded.)

Recently, Convergys lost the FedEx project (just like they went bankrupt. Seeing a pattern?)

2005-ish: I got an oppertunity to work with our local electricity utility, Manitoba Hydro. It was a temp job but it had like a month of paid training and way better pay than Convergys, which I hated. Hydro hired about 25 of us to work in their call center while they switched their billing system from separate bills for gas and electric all into one; we were to help with an extra call volume that never came.

I got illegally fired because I thought, at the time, I had an anxiety disorder and I was missing a lot of work as I started learning to deal with it and my medication. I had a doctor's note and everything for the time missed and the time I had to take off... but they told me to fuck off anyway. I took them to "court" and they paid me to keep quiet.

2005-ish: Worked for Hickory Farms in three malls in my city at Christmas, selling and sampling their products. It was actually a lot of fun, good times. Lots of work though, driving across the city to three separate malls.

2006-ish: had lots of time off, nothing to do. Several months were spent without a job while I dealt with Hydro, and then I finally got a job at another local greenhouse. It was a nice job but my bosses were terrible, constantly telling us how the mentally challenged kids she hired did a better job than us. Worked there until my case with Hydro got through and I got a nice chunk of money; quit in the summer and went on a road trip to British Columbia with it.

Started school in winter of 2006/2007 I think. I don't have everything in order anymore. Tried to work for Hickory Farms one more time in the winter of 2007 but because I had a government student loan and I wasn't allowed to make more than $50/week, I had to quit. They were paying me too much and it threatened my loans.

That's it. Been a student since then.

You guys forced me to remember lots of jobs, I had started to forget already.

1998-2002 Summers, Lifeguard for the city of Willowick, OH - Getting paid to sit in a chair 15 minutes at a time getting tan.. can't really beat that.

2000-2002, Night Assistant for OSU - Getting paid to stay up late nights to watch and sign-in people coming into the dorms while playing pool or watching TV.. not too bad.

2002-2004, Line Cook at Bistro 2110 - Learned to cook, met some awesome friends, ate whatever I wanted to cook for myself (NY strip steaks, filet mignons, salmon) every night.. needless to say, I got fat.

2004-2005, Associate Sales Rep at Game Stop - Rearranged shelves, pushed reserves, and played video games mostly.. fun for the 6 months I was there.

2005-2007, Customer Service Rep at Micro Center Inc. - Answered phones for our online customer service number which was a drag.. but at least I could surf the web and do whatever in between the calls.

2007-2008, Product Specialist at Micro Center Inc. - Getting paid to surf the interwebs for cool new products to bring into our stores. Also got to bring in lots of samples of said products and even take some home to keep.. free shit, 'nuff said.

2008-present, Merchandise Assistant at Micro Center Inc. - Getting paid to generally slack off most of the day while doing a few reports here and there.. being on salary is nice when you have no work ethic

Never had a part-time/full-time job. Here is some of what I have done.

-Christmas Gigs, orchestral percussion. 1-2 performances/1 rehearsal: $50-$100 (few times a year usually)
-Local Orchestra (1 gig/1 rehearsal). $150
-Jazz Gigs, Vibes. Few Performances/1 rehearsal: no pay (do it because I love it)
-Private Instruction twice a week per student: $20-30 every half hour.
-Band Camps. Times vary weekly. Usually 2 weeks. $600-1200 per 2 weeks.
-Brass Band percussion. (did it for the lulz)
-Played timpani for a Catholic Mass. 2 Gigs/1 rehearsal $150

and of course

-Full Scholarship (12 hours). I sold my soul to the music department.

Paralegal Trainee [2005-2006]: Worked for a real-estate/homicide lawyer as a secretary/gopher. Looked up boring shit like title searches. Also, got to look for holes in testimony and evidence and transcribe court dossiers. Got laid off after the summer of '06 because I was looking at forums and IGN at work and he thought I was looking at porn. Not to mention, he thought I was cutting out on work... on days I wasn't supposed to work. $6.25 peak.

Expo/Barback[Summer '08]: Worked for my dad's restaurant, but worked under his chef, not him, so it was basically like any other job. Dressed, groomed, and found loving homes for neglected food. Basically, I did sauces and garnishes. Occasionally moved food out to the dining room, in which case I was like any other waiter. When we did parties, I cleaned up beer bottles and all sorts of gross shit. Got hit with a broken bottle in the shoulder. Also, bounced. $7.25 expo, $5.30 barback.

2004 school year: warehouseman at the university's culinary support center.  Basically a rode around a powered handjack and packed food on pallets for the various dining halls on campus.  All in all, not a bad job.

2005 summer to a month ago: IT support for the university.

inbetween I've done various bits of tree and roof work, but it was never steady.

Well, let's see...

1994-1997: My first real job! Small's Formal Wear, selling and renting tuxedos.  This job was actually awesome for a high schooler.

1996-1997: Software Etc.  I worked this and the tux job at the same time, mostly to get the employee discount on games

1998-2001: Cartoonist for the college paper.  I got like $20 a week for each strip.

1999-2001: Went from "dorm senator" to Parlimentarian of the college SGA.  Got a stipend of $100 a month which was pretty sweet, frankly.

1999: Software tester at Absolute Quality (who Hasbro now owns).  Testing video games is really, really boring.

2000-2001: Assistant Editor of the college Literary Magazine.  Another $50 a month type job.  You might notice a trend here, but trust me, all these little jobs really add up when you're a college student.

2000: Assistant web lackey at my sister's web design company.  My first foray into the web world.

2001: Post-college job at Crate & Barrel.

2002: Taught English in Japan for a short stint.  Good pay

2002-2003: Web design contractor at Maryland Public Television. 

2003-2008: Web site manager at a small non-profit company.

2008-now: Web site manager at a very much for profit publishing company.

that job was fucking crazy.  I think I lowered my IQ by about 20 points from all the CO2 I inhaled in the freezers.  Everyday I'd go home with a hypoxia headache.  There was liquid nitrogen everywhere... sometimes it rained from the fucking ceiling.  You'd think making icecream would be marginally safe right?  Have you ever seen someone trip and land with their arm in a vat of liquid nitrogen and icecream?  NOT PRETTY.
