I've got a Ben Stein Flick you should watch if you want to see the opposite side of the spectrum.

Religion to me has always been two things to me. The justification of things that cannot be logically explained, such as the afterlife or the beginning of the universe, and about imparting certain values upon people. I respect and admire all religions when their doing things correctly, like preaching understanding, kindness, and just being a decent person. Hell, some people just simply need that omnipotent finger wagging above them saying "Do this and you're in trouble." Of course no one likes it when it's used as a soapbox for hatred and ignorance, but the same can be said of a lot of things, Atheists included.

At the end of the day religion could very well tear this world asunder, but forcefully trying to pull people away from their religions could be the spark that sets things off. If only people could just be normal about it and be ok with everyone, regardless of beliefs, but idiots will always take it too far and ruin it for everyone.

But the question on my mind is, is it worth 10 bucks to see.

Really? From Ben Stein? Huh...

I didn't mean to imply I'm a religious person, as anybody who even remotely knows me should be able to guess that I'm not. However one nice benefit I can see from churches and religion is the sense of belonging and meaning it can give someone. As small as this world is, it's very easy to feel lonely and unable to fit in anywhere. Many churches help alleviate that and can re instill a sense of hope into a person in a way that alternatives like the internet can't.

Lost a lot of respect for him after I found that out. Sad

The key difference is beliefs vs. solid, physical, concrete evidence.
Religion is substantiated by it's disciples, science and the universe around us exists with or without humanity.

Well quantum physics from what I understand seems to point to the fact that some sort of observer is necessary.  Or at least that seems to be a theory?  I've been reading enough spec fic and wikipedia articles on the theories to make my head hurt.  Did you know that all the problems with the LHC could be evidence for it being dangerous under the quantum suicide or quantum immortality thought experiment?

At which point did I mention quantum physics?

What I meant in my post is that you can believe anything you want, but it doesn't change how the universe works; only how you interpret it.

Well you said science and the universe would exist without humanity.  And it may not.  At least in its current form.

i thaught atheism was just not beleiving about god, you dont need a fucking group to not beleive in god, shit you shouldnt even talk about god, atomic athiests piss me off as much as the catholics.

if you go as far as to make a book to proove god doesnt exist who are you trying to convince?

shit why is turning people into athiests any better than turning them into christians?

note before 'lol dave wants to sex the pope' i dont care if theres a 'god' if there was/is it wouldnt effect me.

edit: this pretty much sums up my thaughts.

there is no proof of either the existence or nonexistence of God or gods, but since any God or gods that may exist appear unconcerned for the universe or the welfare of its inhabitants, the question is largely academic anyway.

Prove to me there is a god.  Science doesn't work by saying "Well you can't prove it doesn't exist."

It's better because atheists aren't trying to force anything upon other people.  The majority of very religious people I know manage to incorporate something ridiculous about their religion once in a while.  Atheists don't go around telling people they're going to hell if they don't believe in something.

I've refrained from saying anything in this thread because I feel that arguing over religion is like arguing over the internet; even if you win you're still retarded.

That being said, what you've just said Jmaster is blatantly false. The most forceful people I've ever encountered in matters of religion are athiests, who will argue with you until they are blue in the face trying to convince you that having a belief in God, a god, a deity, or any kind of higher power is retarded and wrong.

Not to Jmaster in particular, but rather to those in the community who have the relevant attitude: Taking a few personal experiences (or worse, what you've seen in a 'mockumentary') and forming a prejudice based upon that is AS close-minded as these people you mock, if not more. You should be ashamed to think you have the moral/logical high-ground.

I'm not saying that there aren't retarded, forceful personalities for religion, I know they exist. But by and large, in the areas of the country I've lived, it's athiests that are the most close-minded people I've met.

Personally, I don't understand why people can't just live and let live.
