I have a CycloDS Evolution as my slot-1 solution and an EZ-V 3 in 1 as my slot-2 solution. The 3 in 1 works perfectly. I love it and my Cyclo so.

So... I haven't finished either Earthbound or Mother 3 (heresy on the first, I know)  but I gotta say, after playing about the same amount of time on both games, I'm far more inclined to finish Mother than Earthbound.  I don't know why, but I'm enjoying this segmented, perspective swapping storyline of Mother 3 far more than the generic mega-linear RPG story lines.  (Think most Final Fantasies, Chrono Cross, etc.)  I think there's more to be had in this shifting perspective form of storytelling than in the epic nature in most RPGs.

There's a lot of references, especially toward the end of Mother 3 that you wont get without playing 2. Mother 1 is optional, and not necessary to understand the story of 3, Mother sort of leads into Mother 2, which in turn leads into 3, but there's a disconnect between 1 and 3. Its not necessary to enjoy the story, but its just one of those little extras that makes the game special. Also just to make it clear to you on the naming, since it got mucked up like Final Fantasy did...

      NES    -  SNES    -  GBA
JP: Mother - Mother 2 - Mother 3
US: Earthbound Zero - Earthbound - N/A (Earthbound 2)
EU: Never got any of them

Mother was translated (as Earthbound) and you can find a rom, however, it was never released commercially since by the time it was ready the SNES was already out. You can find a ROM dump on most any site that carries them. Mother 2 was translated and released in the US as Earthbound. They used the same name since the first didn't make it to the states.

Because of poor sales numbers of Earthbound when it was released, Nintendo decided not to release Mother 3 outside of japan. Hence why its taken a small team of hackers 2 years to translate the ROM.

I've been sinking a lot of time into earthbound, its pretty cute.  Part of me feels like it was written by jewish people.  "I know your tired dear here have some XXX and go up to bed we will talk in the morning."

That said I am getting a bit sick of the grinding and how hard it is to get from point A to point B without a lot of encounters.  Yea I know its pretty standard for RPGs but I constantly feel like I'm waging a war of attrition and your inventory is pretty small compared to the healing items you need.  But the butterflies help a lot.

The grinding tones down a lot as the game progresses, once you get your third party member it does down a lot since you have that many more people attacking.

This would be true if the amount of experience you get from each enemy doesn't half with every conscious member you gain :-(

Fortunately, the exp you gain from each encounter scales up much faster than the actual difficulty of the beasts.

I never really had any trouble in Earthbound except for the first sanctuary and Peaceful Rest Valley (Which is odd since I never ground and was severally underleveled) Probably because I actively avoided any hard fights though XP

Shopping Mall was hard. Thinking back though, I had a lot of trouble with the return to Onett, and the Cliff that Time Forgot as well. That's where the lack of grind really bit Tongue

The return to Onett is easy, Paula -> PSI Shield Sigma -> Proceed to beat enemies into submission with physical attacks

I was always afraid to use my PSI outside of boss battles though since I was afraid when I need the PP I wouldn't have it. Probably stems from whatever causes me to horde items and ammo and stuff, in the fear that I'll need it later Tongue

This is why i hate all RPG's besides Earthbound, Golden Sun and Pokemon.
In Earthbound, at some point your characters are so overpowered thaqt you don't need to worry against a normal monster, also, Ness is Cheap
