I have this same problem, and for me anyway it seems to stem from the thought that if I beat the scrub enemies with weak stuff and save the big guns for the boss, I'll have a good chance at beating him when I get there, but If i use some of my good stuff on the little enemies and I find myself at the boss with not enough power, I'm fucked and have to reload my game. Anyway, a good read and gratz on the frontpage.

Good read SWPM. I too run around 90% of most games with the melee weapon.

I don't want to get to near the end of a game only to find out that I don't have enough ammo, or I don't have the super special fire rounds, needed to down a big baddie and keep moving. I hoard as an insurance policy, because most games just aren't good enough for me to want to play nearly twice. It seems that ammo / inventory management has replaced the old "you get 3 lives" gimmick from the arcades, to introduce artificial constrains/difficulty/punishment, but usually all it does is make me spend the majority of my in-game time playing miser and quartermaster, and not playing the game. It takes the piss out of Bioshock to say to yourself "OK, there was a box of machinegun ammo two rooms back on the left that I didn't pick up cause I was full. So I'll use about 25 machine gun rounds then go back and top off." Oh, the homes worth of shit I filled up in Ultima7, Morrowind, Oblivion, etc. |

That header picture is from the guy who went on a drunken rampage in Oblivion and killed, like, 130 people.

On that note, I think it's somewhat poor game design that you even CAN play through most games like that. Maybe that's what the harder difficulties are for, but I wish there were more situations where I was really compelled to employ some heavy explosives and such against my opponents in games. It just seems kind of stupid that you can play through most games with nothing but the basic weaponry.

Great article, it's somewhat of a problem with me but nowadays it's a lot less. I have it mostly with health items, I stock up on those like I'm at 1 health all the time...
Only criticism is that you use you're where you should use your all the time. Signature temporarily out of order until I get off my lazy ass to fix it. |

Great article!
I actually find myself in the same situation, I keep most items for the 'last moment'. Although, I sometimes do it by purpose when beating a game the second (or more) time (Zelda OOT, no shield, 3 hearts or <X% items Metroid) [move][glow=black,2,300] Vote Benito 2012  [/glow]                             ï@.[/move] |

Nice article! I have the same problem. Of course this led to my other strange videogamism - I tend to like using a pistol over all other weapons. Seriously you don't fuck with me in Halo 2 if I have a pistol. I also tend to know exactly how many headshots it takes to kill each enemy with a pistol in every game.

Pistol was my favorite weapon in Halo 1, but I hated it in Halo 2. |
