LOL when I glanced over the subject I thought someone had a question about DNS...

Doesn't seem too bad but I can't quickly find through what protocol it does it's network file sharing... If it does it through SMB or something like that I would be interested... If it does some proprietary D-Link stuff... never mind...

Ah it does SMB... But a quick look around showed me this. Which does the same but is a little cheaper here...

Looks cool, I think you should buy him one drive to go with it though. It would be like giving someone a gadget that required batteries without a battery...

I found out that that conceptronic machine is a rebranded DNS-323... I ordered it, seems they are very hackable as well so you can install custom apps on it. Smile

Actually, all media players can use this NAS... You just map a network drive to a letter and use it as if it was a local disk.

My rebranded DNS-323 has arrived, I'll report on how it works later, I'm still at work.

OK, this machine is quite sweet. I loaded it up with 1 TB HD. (Going to get another TB HD next month and set it up in RAID1) The performance is pretty good, saturating my 100mbit line quite easily.

It runs linux internally which most of you won't care about but this does make it pretty hackable. So far I installed an apple fileserver next to SMB one so my mac os x install gets better performance. I get to the same files from windows, mac os x and linux. (My dual boot gaming rig and my laptop respectively.) I also installed a torrentclient so I can download torrents directly from my quiet NAS and turn off my rig when I go to sleep. There are also other p2p clients available.

The next steps will be to get the aforementioned extra HD for raid-1 and a gbit switch so I can get more speed from it.

So yeah, I'm pretty happy, thank you for this thread vandam, else I wouldn't have bought this NAS.

Well it's quite simple as long as you aren't afraid of command lines. You can drop a shell script in the root of Volume_1 which will run on reboot. If you get the standard script it will start a telnet server so you can log in. From here you can install a lot of linux command line software like the torrent client. What I've done is set up the torrent client so that I can drop a torrent file in a directory on a share of the NAS and this torrent file will be automatically added to the list and it will start downloading. rtorrent is totally commandline based but has advanced features like DHT, scheduling and seeding until a certain ratio is reached.

All info is on this site.
