So up until now, my family's been living with cox cable television service. About 60 working channels, including one or two movie channels. We've been using it for about 4 years, simple enough to enjoy. Until recently we decided to upgrade to DirecTV. This is by far the worst decision my family has ever made. For one, I just don't like satellite.
Why?
There's an annoying 10-20 second delay between switching channels and there's no way of telling if you own a channel or not, just flip and be disappointed. If that's not enough, there's way too many channels. So you could be spending an hour just figuring out what you want to watch, because over half of this crap you won't even care about. And once you find something you actually care about, you'll find out that you already had this on your old cable provider so the upgrade was even more useless. And if that's not enough, if you've got parents like mine, there are parental controls. Now don't get me wrong, I can perfectly understand why there would be parental controls on here, however being able to block every program with a rating above TV-Y is simply bullcrap. (This is the point where my piss comes to a fine boil and steam) And what more, anytime there's a good show on, that you like and are "allowed to watch" the signal drops out. And then it comes to the point, that beautiful point where you see the perfect movie to watch at the perfect time after finishing going through all this crap, it's not pay-per-view so you know it's free, you click the channel and, "you do not own this channel".

It's at this point you chuck your tv and satellite reciever out the window and start shooting random civillians.

This is the first time I've ever heard someone genuinely upset that they had too many channels. And you're complaining about the split-second delay in changing channels? Really? REALLY? You're starting to give Mr James Moneybags a run for his spoiled kid money.

Sounds like when we got Starchoice. While good for when you miss shows and the like, it was horrible. You literally got like 11 different CBC's, and like 15 different CTVs

I suppose I should've been a bit more specific. It takes about 10-20 seconds for a channel to tune in.

Really? That's pretty bad, I never had anything more than a split-second at worst. Are there snowstorms in your area right now? That might be causing it, since there's never any inclement weather here in Texas.

<3 Texas

edit: I have Dish

I forgot what satellite company we use, but it's pretty good. It takes maybe half a second to tune in.

The satellite at our lakehouse is seriously bad, though. It's got literally 6000 channels, 99% of which are "scheduled video" or something like that, which just ends up being a blank screen.

i have Cable TV on my apt (well, had) and DirecTV here at my parent's. And i totally agree.
Lucky for me, my parents aren't like yours and they don't give a crap what we see (lazy cable porn FTW. It's perfect when you're way too lazy to stand up and go to the PC and open your bookmarks). But yes, i agree, i usually see here what i used to watch on my dept. I hate having to go over all the PPV channels between the children channels (Cartoon Network, Nick, etc, the ones i usually watch) to the movie channels because i'm way too lazy to memorize them.

I got used to the delay between channels, but somehow i think the image quality is worst, ALSO I FUCKING HATE EXTREME MAKEOVER, THEY HAVE IT ON EVERY SINGLE CHANNEL! and that guy is a dick

Oh yea, forgot you live out there. Huh, I dunno what to tell you. But if I told you the excessive silica present in the desert sands makes tv transmissions very noisy, would you believe me?

I've never had that problem with direct tv.  Sounds like a hardware issue, did you install it yourself?  You're going to want to check the alignment on the dish, and things like trees (LOL in Arizona??! LOL) or other buildings in between your dish and the southern sky can be detrimental to your signal.  My dad once said the best tool in telecommunications was The Ax.

...You're using a mini-dish right?  Not one of the old giant mofos, right?

It was installed by a professional, not us. No tree's blocking. And yes, it's small.

Remind what DSL is.

Also, everything still works. (Not that that means much)
