I think I have some sort of virus, whenever I put in a cd, then try to get to it in My Computer, the My Computer window freezes, start bar disappears, then eventually everything freezes.

NOD32 is scanning right now, so do you guys know any good free anti spyware/malware, or if you know a fix?

Look at the thread for when I had a virus.  Follow what Vandam says.

I must pass on this obvious joke opportunity else some malcontent might smite me for swinging at Softballs.

And verily, I just unintentionally called Vandam Softballs, and I'm good with that.

I think there are five separate threads about virus protection on here. My usual response is Clam Win AV and Malwarebytes Antimalware.

I've been having good luck with Bart PE and Housecall.
I've done enough in the past month that I should really make a bootable USB key so I can load definition updates.

lol - new member group for me.

@jeff your problem sounds interesting , but not symptomatic of a virus. sounds more like a windows problem.

i dont have any suggestions how to cross reference it.

try a different cd  ? try loading a cd in safe mode ?

Yeah, its been acting up.

When the problem began, I had to restart.  Then, it hung on the initial boot screen, you know, when you first turn it on, GIGABYTE orange text or whatever.

It happens when after I immediately restart from My Computer freezing, and the taskbar disappearing.    If this is of interest to you, I also cannot access the desktop, icons disappear and I can make the boxes when you drag.

I have yet to do the cd thing.

I heard that holding really powerful magnets near your hard drive helps.  Go try that.

Well, halfway into the repair install, it didn't want to continue.  From then I realize the disc is fucked, so I hit quit.  Now I can't do another repair, and it won't detect a windows install.  ;_;

Is there a way to get it to detect the previous attempt at a repair and give me another?

Turn on SMART in the bios, watch for errors. Listen for odd sounds from the drive.
Monitor the windows event viewer for disk io errors (Start-> Run-> eventvwr.msc, click on System)

If any luck windows will detect the file system. If so run a full check disk with both options checked off.
Keep listening to the drive and watching the event viewer.

If you haven't had any problems yet, go ahead and scan the drive for virii/spyware using the tool of your choice.

If you are getting errors or sounds.... Sad

Turns out, stupid repair install fucked up the partition, and made it raw.

Used this utility:
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

It found the lost partition, and rewrote it to the drive.  Backing up files, and about to reinstall, because there is no hope for the windows install.

Also, should I install TinyXP Platinum Edition 2 or the Windows XP SP3 Slipstreamed disc I just made?

It shouldn't do that..... it shouldn't be touching the partition at all!
Good call on TestDisk, I haven't heard of it yet; am adding to my tools.

Personally I'd stick with the OEM disks, I've had issues in the past with TinyXP and other modified versions. Others will disagree.
