Like and Uhmm are time wasters.  Most people feel uncomfortable having pauses when they speak but can sometimes have trouble when they have to think and talk at the same time so it becomes a sort of crutch.  I suffer from the likes and uhmms sometimes when I'm trying to remember something or I'm just tired and forgetting words.
