Posting this in the history thread and not the earthy thread, because this topic is conversation meta-brbu talk.

I was going to make a long sprsrs post but I am so fucking tired I can't see the right way.

2- your friends list provides social interaction
3- forums that lack drama hold no entertainment value and are as insignificant as a redshirt. the way people interact and the drama that is presented is what keeps forums from being replaced by more convenient media

These forums might be #3 to you, but to me these forums are #2. I'm posting this in the history thread, because this gang started as just a bunch of regular TF2 players, playing on a "Cheers" server where everybody knows your name. We added each other to our friends lists. We even had a drunken mailman.

Tragic Gets a Job

These forums started out as a place for this gang of regular players of 1 TF2 server to hang out and talk about games when they are not playing games. Though we've talked about it a ton, we've never had a website to drive people here. What brought me here was a desire for a community that wanted to stay at #2, welcoming any and all new people that also wished to abide by the "don't be a dick" rule, and not turn into #3. There are already plenty of #3s out there, dtoid, shacknews, gamefaqs, somethingawful, etc,. If I wanted that experience, I would go there.

No, I'm making the idea of a preschool style modded forum to be useless. A few years ago I modded a DII site that had an active user count of around 200 people. Ownership switched and admin was given to a 30 something year old menopausal woman and a 40 some year old socially inept jackass who thought it should be patrolled like the hallways of an elementary school and people should be punished for the most minor of infractions. (he called that guy stupid, warning 1 of 3 before ban) People were told to stop making "useless threads" based on mod discretion (btw the chosen mods had horrible discretion) and threads were straight locked instead of cleaned, leading to like 3 new threads a day instead of the old 20, 30, 40, etc. etc. That site now has maybe 10 "active" members. GG.

Just because someone ruined your old forum doesn't give you the right to ruin someone else's forum. Ownership and admin here are pretty much the same as day 1. There is no major admin policing, other than "do what you want as long as you don't piss someone off." But there is a lot of self-policing on that front, which is why most of us are pretty vocal when shenanigans start to get out of hand. Fun is fun, and we're all generally a fun-loving bunch that goofs on each other a ton, but when someone says "enough" you need to cool it. I've lost count of the times that people have told me to knock it off, and you don't see me continuing to do it.

tl;dr yes, forums are useless compared to other forms of interaction if there is no drama. If something actually pisses a person off then the rules of the internet and irl grownup world apply; fucking grow some balls or ignore it, everyone is quite capable of not responding or closing the thread.

As I said above, the forums are a great place for gamers to talk casually about games when not playing games. We're geeks, planning games to play this week, new mods to try, new games to buy, games to avoid, game bugs to try, discussing the plots and backstory of games, subscribing to games together, pooling resources to have community servers so we can play together. That's not useless to me. To me, useless are the posts I have to wade through to get to that stuff. That's why we have a lulz thread, because most people don't want to wade through dozens of lulz posts to find a game review. Not that we don't like lulz, and not like we don't derail nearly every thread. But there is a limit. If someone started to repeatedly highjack the Sandwich thread into a Soup thread and ruin the discussion of sandwiches, you'd be pissed.

I don't want #3. I want to keep #2. Still, this is a place of free speech: if people want to turn this into #3 they can say so. But just because it is free speech does not mean it is a democracy.
