Ok, so economy has had a huge affect on schools, am I right? There have been a lot of budget cuts and jobs are being slashed left and right. But up until now, I haven't been affected, and that's a good thing considering AIMS (Arizona's Instrument to Measure Standards) coming up. Why? The AIMS has a scholarship attached. About 30-50 grand for intuition.

However.

Recently, colleges have announced they are dropping the AIMS scholarship. That means that my 3.5 GPA average means NOTHING now. So I can go ahead and do great in school, and it still means I'm probably paying over 100,000 dollars for college.

How was your day?

You don't have to pay back scholarships.

But I digress.

As a side job perhaps.

I enjoy cooking, but it doesn't pay well. So who knows.

Same thing happened in Florida, also I think Arizona is one of the worst hit states.  Yea loans and 3rd party scholarships coupled with a shitty job is your best bet.  Depending on the school some hire student workers.  The pay is usually minimum wage but they have extremely flexible hours.

I worked at the UF library for like a year or so giving people the books they ordered and checking them back in (the library was closed for renovation so all the books were at a warehouse).

Same, While it might be nice not having to pay those back, have a side job in highschool or college should be a national requirement, if you have never worked a retail or a food service job, you have no idea what those people have to put up with.

Working retail for years in high school and college gave me an appreciation for what those people do and some handy tips on what NOT TO DO when shopping. Even little things you think might be benine can cause hours of extra work and frustration.

When is the scholarship being dropped? You might still be able to get in under the wire. Worth checking into if you haven't.

Also, yipes at 100K. Where'd you get that number? I assume that includes living expenses and whatnots. Universities in my province are criticized for having the highest tuition in Canada, but after all was said and done my tuition/books/supplies cost me about $35-$40 for a 5 year degree, which paid with practically zero scholarships and debt thankfully as my degree had a co-op program (worth looking at as well Big Grin).

Either way it sucks though. Cutting education always is a shame.

Karth, unless you are a privileged child, you've got to be stupid to believe that even with a full tuition scholarship you won't have to pay/borrow money for college.

They're called loans..get used to it.

I'm not doing loans if I can help it. Of course, I'm really not looking for an actual degree right now. (Although it would be nice) I'm just trying to learn enough so that I can start doing what I want to do.

I'm racking up loans at the moment. There was no other way for me to do it, unless I wanted to wait god knows how long to save up enough to go.

Not just tuition.

All over.

Books, classes, food, general needs, etc.

but probably 50-60 thousand of college-related expense.
