Goddammit! Okay, in order to go offline, I need to go online and then go offline. Great.
I need to (as so many people say) disconnect my lan cable (it does nothing) and then try to restart. The problem is, I used to be able to run in offline mode just fine, y'know play some l4d or hf or whatever. I go home, get Dawn of War II, everything's fine. I come back to school I can't go into offline mode anymore. I can't just find an internet connection unless I want to spend some monies and time for a wireless card, and the next time I go home is in a few months. I want to play some fuckin' games. |

offline mode is pretty random for me, varying from computer to computer. :-\ it generally works on my N10, never on my desktop.

Your computer needs to have a log of your account logged in before it will let you play offline. So yes, if you log in when you're home, then you should be good to go offline mode for awhile.

What puzzles me is the "This game cannot be played while in offline mode" shit. My guess is that a lot of the files necessary for the game are streamed or something?
Funny thing is, I even get it with HL2+Episodes, which are games that can be purchased in box sets and are by definition single-player games. Maybe I just have a fucked up computer. But I feel your pain. |

I think it's actually copyright protection stuff. Steam is designed to be unobtrusive copyright protection when online, but when offline it can be exploited. They probably haven't found a good way to deal with it yet. On the plus side you can download and play any steam games on as many computers as you want as long as your account isn't logged on twice, so as copyright protection goes its still the best for consumers IMO. |

[/quote] It is excellent, yes, since I'm normally a solo gamer. I still wish I could play a registration on more than one machine at once so I could host small LANs with friends. |
