It's a Sony DW-D56A. I googled it and it sounds like it's just a shitty drive. I guess I'll just start looking for a new one on Newegg.

Make sure the new one has Blue LED's.

Would one of these work? The 700m has a modular drive bay (whatever that is) so I'm not sure if I need anything special, or if a standard slim drive will work.

Looks like any IDE slim drive will work for you.
You will just have to transfer over the rear connector, and perhaps a sled/track.
Just get a fine screwdriver set.

Shit. I just noticed the connector on mine is on the opposite side of the ones on Newegg. Will there be a way to change this?

Yours isn't actually on the opposite side, you're just looking at it from the wrong angle. The newegg picture is taken of the laptop side of the drive (directly opposite the door) as it would be installed. Your picture is flipped around, but looks like the connector is on the correct side.

However, looking at the connector in your top picture it does look like you have a SATA optical drive. I could be wrong, because it's hard to tell from your picture, and googling the model says its an IDE/ATAPI interface drive. If it is SATA, unfortunately it doesn't look like newegg only has one slim combo drive (DVD-ROM / CD-RW like yours) with a SATA interfaces, and its out of stock. Fortunately though, searching newegg for slim DVD burner (DVD-RW / CD-RW, an upgrade from what you have) with a SATA interface, and you find a couple of alternatives: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLis...1038406820.

Just make sure you look at the pictures to verify that the connectors look the same. The one that looks like a socket (the one in your bottom picture) is IDE/ATAPI + Power, the one that looks like two L-shaped tabs is SATA + Power.

That looks like it's a propitiatory connector.

You will have to transfer it over to the new drive. It should be a pair of screws.
