Here is the deal about region locking and the DSi and whatnot.

Regular DS carts (the ones that play on both the DS and the DSi, ie. most games being made) are region free. If you have a DS cart, you can play it on any DS or DSi.

The stuff that is region locked is anything that is EXCLUSIVE to the DSi, which basically means DSiWare. So Japanese DSiWare games will only play on a Japanese DSi, and American DSiWare will only play on an American DSi. Nothing super new.

In terms of hacks/carts, Nintendo has done something interesting and basically locked down the DSi to ANYTHING that isn't an official cart. This includes preview/review ROM builds that are usually given out to press. They're taking piracy fairly seriously this time. I'm sure it will be cracked eventually, but don't expect an R4 or other Slot 1 substitute to pop up anytime soon.

If you already have DS, there's probably not a reason to go get a DSi. However, there IS some DSiWare stuff coming down the line that sounds like it might be pretty cool... :-X

The fact the new DSi has upgradeable firmware is interesting though, I wonder if that means they'll find a way to hack custom firmware onto the system itself now.

[/quote]This has been going on with the PSP since the first year it's released, and now if you have any recent version of the custom firmware, if you network update the firmware it'll download it from the custom firmware's site. This'll happen with the DSi, since supposedly it uses the same exact exploit the PSP uses to install custom firmware.
