Well in the end I reinstalled Vista, so now I'm wondering: how do I partition my one and only internal hard drive?

when you install windows 7, click on "advanced" or something when you choose the location to install to. this should bring up some options like "New", "Delete", etc.

select "New" to create a new partition with your desired size, then you should be OK. this is just from the top of my head, so it may not be exactly like this, but i'm sure you can figure it out.
If you already have a single partition on the whole drive, you have to delete that partition, then create two new ones each of whatever size you want (usually splitting the drive in half if you want two OSs). That means it'll blow away your current OS, you'll need to reinstall both of them to get it to work right.

Can't you use an Ubunutu live cd to resize a partition/create a new one?
Could, ya, but its normally more trouble than its worth IMO. Especially if its a brand new OS install you might as well blow it away and do it again, if its vista it doesn't take very long.

Why can't Windows take a leaf out of the Linux book, and fit their entire OS into a nice comfy 700MB.  Lets be honest, after you cut out all the junk, there isn't really THAT much useful stuff in a fresh Windows install.  Thats why I slip streamed my own install disc, simplifies things nicely.
They did for embedded systems, but they throw more bells & whistles than the average user needs into the retail installs of their stuff. XPembedded (XPe) will comfortably run on a <512MB CF card. I use it every day at work (I program industrial/manufacturing equipment)

With Wine it is possible.  I was able to successfully run several Windows only games from within Ubuntu.

So wait, when you simply upgrade to 7, it makes a folder with all your old stuff in it? Will all the old drivers I have installed be deleted/saved somewhere else to make way for 7's automated driver installation thing? I gotta upgrade today because the end of my try-out period ends today and I already rearmed three times. Still had one last rearm apperantly.

Windows 7 cannot be 700MB like some forms of Linux because Windows 7 has more functionality and features because it has to appeal to everybody. Live with it.

I think the appeal of linux is that you get to choose what features and functionality to install and what not.  It's not perfect but some people like the control over their OS.

Well Windows 7 has been successfully partitioned off (named the volume label Se7en  Big Grin ) and installed/updated.  I have to say, I really like what I am seeing so far!  I still need to play with it a bit more but so far Libraries are what have me the most excited.  I was able to start grabbing my music from different hard drives and have it all show up under my music folder, the same with videos and movies.  It'll make finding things so much easier.  I am also fast getting used to the new taskbar, though the start menu is a bit qwerky.

I can't view the large partition of my hard drive that holds vista, only the 50 gigs i set aside for 7.  Do you know how to fix this?

How did you partition it off?  Did you use the Disk Management Console or some special program? Go to Start > Control Panel > System & Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management then take a screen shot and let me see what you have set up.  It should look something like this if you successfully partitioned off some space without screwing up your original partition:

I'm guessing you chose to install Windows 7 inside of the D partition then, and C is what holds Vista?  As long as you chose the D partition you should have no problem seeing your C drive.
