Recording what the speakers are playing

So I'm looking for a way to record the sound that is outputting through my speakers at a given time.  The trick is, although I remember how to do this on XP, I've got no clue on how to manage it on vista.  Thoughts?

i used a piece of software that didnt require you to re-map shit, but i dont remember how to find it.

Check your recording input options, chances are that you have a 'Stereo Mix' option.

I think I got an explanation, but I'm not happy.  Looks like a lot of onboard laptop sound card manufacturers are lazy as fuck.  The drivers on mine seem to only allow for mics.  Seems the industry morons are all "hurrrrr, who'd record what the speaker plays?"  Yet another reason why I wish I had both a proper PC and my laptop.

Yep.  Looks like Sigmatel, realtek, etc, were being leaned on by the RIAA.  Ppl were recording streaming audio and whatnot.  So this is now a "reccomend me a good external soundcard" thread.

speaker is an input option on audacity
use it

Not if your driver doesn't support it it's not.  Audacity can't force the hardware.  Besides, I prefer Audition.

wasnt aware. whenever i have used it the option was there. not that i used it more than 2 times XD
