I've got a microphone for the computer, like most folks. It seems to record my voice fine and people seem to hear me fine in L4D, but in TF2 nobody can hear me. Is it something wrong with the microphone, or am I doing something stupid?

probably the latter...
theres no way the hardware itself works in 1 game and not another. I'd assume it has to do with in game options... side thought vista has the volume control for each program individually... maybe it has that for recording too? (kinda doubt it though) try messing with the in game options/volume. Put voice_loopback to 1, and that will let you hear yourself (if anything is coming through) and if it is sorry, (people hear you) trust me... I'm a 2L |

i think TF2 doesnt detect your microphone unless you set it to the default device in windows.
try that |

TF2 also has it's own volume settings.
Verify that they are set correctly in your multiplayer menu. |
