Look for deals, don't just go to newegg, type in a product, and assume that's the set price. Also, those are GTX's, not GTX+'s (they are different cards). The GTX+'s haven't dropped in price much iirc. Scratch that, I haven't looked at GTX+ stuff for quite a while and had forgotten they fell short from what was promised. The 4870's, which ARE better than a 9600GT SLI, were selling for between 100 and 140 last time I looked.

Keep in mind that by spending the extra bit you are;

-Saving yourself from having to worry about the PSU ratings and whether it can handle the SLI
-Not having to worry about your current 9600 shitting out before the new one does since it's older
-Not having to worry about anything shitting out sooner than it would due to the extra heat
-Not having to worry about any complications, bugs, glitches, etc. that arise from SLI (granted most of these are worked out now, but there are still plenty of headaches associated with SLI/crossfire)

Lastly, those benches seem quite off. I used a 9600GT for a few days and was sitting at 40-50fps on 1680x1050 COD4 maxed settings. Either they're using a OC'd/stock OC'd version of the card, or they didn't have settings other than resolution turned up.

And plenty of people will buy a 9600, probably even for the price difference between a better card and another 9600, meaning you spent 0 extra. Funny that.

SLI if you are like me and can't upgrade your GPU
it's much more power efficient to get a new card

and if your old power supply cant handle two cards, then you are buying another one to get where you wanna be, or you have a card sitting around that your computer cant handle.

also, listen to blues
SLI/Crossfire is not the better way to go

A 9600GT in SLI runs consistantly well, if not better than the 9800GTX across the board, for only $80.  Why would I logically choose to not go that route?  SLI isn't the root of all evil you know, there are thousands of rigs out there who have perfectly working SLI set ups.  The problem traditionally with SLI is that it would only gain you a minor 30-40% increase, but with the newer 9XXX models it does anything but. 

Also I'd hardly consider dodgy rebates from dell and expired promo codes as a way to get a GTX260 cheap in a reasonable way.  Thanks for that link though, could be useful anyways.

Well, 40-50 FPS is pretty in-line with their benchmarks...  the first one had the rig running at 40 FPS on average at a resolution slightly higher than what you had it at.

The second graph probably was using an OC'd 9600GT or not running at max settings.

Either way, it's still in line with what you experienced.  Also, I got my 9600GT because it was cheap.  Cheaper than anything else yet performed well at the time, almost as well as $200+ cards when I first got it.  I knew if I ever needed more performance it would be as simple as maybe a year later getting another one for even cheaper than I got my first one, seeing as benchmark shows SLI is actually profitable with a 9600GT compared to older cards.  Of course my combo of a two 9600GT's would end up being more expensive than the GTX260 as it is now ($175), but that would be like me deciding to run on integrated graphics for a year so I could get some $300 video card for $175 a year later.  Prices go down all the time, and in the end it's cheaper for me to shell out an extra $80 for a near 80-100% performance gain which suits my needs than a year later shelling out $175 for a card that works just as well. 

Now the total money spend within those years on a 9600GT and then deciding to get a GTX260 would be much more expensive then simply doing 9600GT SLI.

first impressions: it's pretty cool. the textures and shapes and stuff are :O. Playing TF2 is cool, but I'm still not remotely as good as I was with a mouse; that being said, I've only played TF2 with it for like an hour and a half out of what Novint says is a 20-hour learning curve. I've made a few pretty nice twitch headshots as a sniper.

I still need to find a reasonably comfortable setup; right now my right arm's getting tired pretty quickly in TF2. Triple jumping/rocket jumping is kinda hard.
