I think it's  based on member groups. (i.e admins get 5 stars, server admins 3, mappers 2 and so on) and with the wacky custom titles just getting a random amount.

I agree with pig mask. Members with only one star don't have a member group, 2 means they have a member group, 3 means they're a server admin of some sort, 4 is.....something, and 5 are administrators.

I was told that the stars were just legacy code from some feature that we chose not to use.  I know that priviledges and things like member groups do effect them somehow, but their calculation is a mystery.  I doubt it's by post count because Tragic has two and doesn't post as often as some how have one.  And I doubt it is by time here because Versus has 1 and he signed up pretty early.  Therefore I am out of ideas.

It takes like 2-4 edits to a forum template to display or hide post count. That's of course, assuming that there isn't already a line in there that references something as simple as a "hide post count" checkbox. I've never used simple machines forum software, so I couldn't tell you. Unless post count is fully disabled, the db will continue to track user post counts regardless of there being no displays for it, and if there is a slip up somewhere... say someone forgot to disable user ranks based on post count, then that would still reflect the user's post count, even if we can't see the number because the display has been removed.

Unfortunately afaik there isn't. We can set whether or not a forum board tracks posts, and I told all of them not to (no idea if admins who have made newer boards did this). Unfortunately you still see a "post count: 0" next to everyone's name, and apparently post counts are really fucking important as I there is no option or (afaik at the time) plugins to hide it. So I went in and did my best to hide it in the php code.

Again however, since apparently post counts are the most important fucking thing in the world, you still need at least one membergroup based on post counts. After trying a few standard names and getting shit for it, I just said fuck it and again tried to hide it.

The stars and number of them are assigned when you make a membergroup. They don't dynamically change, they're tied to that group. You can make groups with different stars based on post count, and I think a few other conditions, but seeing as I think post counts are absolutely stupid I didn't do that.
