Also insects can even display more complex behavior than we give them credit for. When I was in Costa Rica I went to some butterfly farm/insect research place where they showed us this bug that was capable of vocal communication within it's hive. I think it had 11 distinctive sounds it made and the other insects would react differently based on what was "said." They even tested them by recording the insects and playing it back to isolate just that variable and they would react in predictable ways depending on what recording they played back.
And they found that squirrels would vocalize warnings of predators to each other despite the fact that it makes them an easier target because there was a sort of "hero effect" where the squirrels social status would be elevated if he survived and he could get with the ladies easier. And on NPR they did a segment on this bird that would be able to recognize if her mate was doing a mating call (creeping) and would habitual interrupt him to throw off his game. (couldn't find articles on the other 2 sorry) |
If you have spent as much time with animal researches as i have, you start to realize how much personification actually goes into their quantifications before they even opperationalize their relevant behaviors of the animal, much less while they are coding these behaviors later. I had a friend that worked at the great ape trust, this research facility in Des Moines that taught bonobos how to use touch panels to use language (in particular, one bonobo named Kanzi). It became quite evident to him within a couple of weeks that the apes had no linguistic skills what so ever, but the researchers were so good at "interpreting", or rather performing enough mental gymnastics to give the behavior context even though there wasn't any, that their data starts to look meaningful. Another time, the pond that is adjacent to the great ape trust got a couple of new swans, and for PR they decided to have a couple of the apes to name the new swans. They came up with ridiculous names that didn't make any sense (like "banana quick" and shit like that), and ended up telling the press that the apes had come up with appropriate names instead. It's all a racket. One good example
I actually visited that place last month. I don't know how accurate or conclusive their work is, but it seems to me that if you're going to try teach language to apes, English is a really bad language to use. As far as I know all verbal communication used by other animals is based on very specific sounds, and since meaning in English has almost nothing to do with intonation, you can say one word in English a thousand different ways without changing the meaning. While humans can look past all the different possible intonations to find that meaning, I highly doubt other animals would be able to do that. |

My friend excelled at the "shotgun" approach. Chat up as many women as possible and you are about to hit one of them.
