I find them more as a topping, such as sprinkles on a cake or sunday. If you have too many toppings, you can't taste the original flavor of the dish. Spoilers: District 9 is being directed by the guy who was going to direct the Halo movie.
The Halo movie was never completed, but he released 3 shorts. Halo live action complete HD I enjoyed these quite a bit, despite how much I hate Halo.

i found the backstory in halo to be cool
before halo 2 and 3 the story that you have to read books to get.
