Getting a cheap piece of shit isn't really a good idea; what if it breaks after warranty and you can't take it back? Then you've spent maybe a few hundred bucks on something that's utterly useless and generally costs a lot to have fixed. You might as well take the extra time to do the research and get a product that isn't bullshit to avoid future annoyance if possible.

I dunno, I'd still research the crap out of it before I bought an appliance that is intended to be in my home for a long time. Since living with HeK I've learned to do so; it's had a huge impact on how long the stuff I buy actually lasts and the quality of the product I get.

It reminds me when Officer Grimes was talking about shoes in Terry Pratchett's books.  He was saying how he has to buy shoes every couple months with cardboard soles because they were all he could afford but they wear out super quick.  With a nice pair of boots they could last almost a lifetime.  If you added up the costs you'd probably save a ton on the expensive shoes, but there was no way he could spend all that money at once.

And that's why all the rich folks stay rich.

I ended up getting a Eureka True Clean because it was on sale at Target and had most of the features I was looking for. I don't really like how the cord coils up on the back but the rest of the features make it worthwhile.

Since I ended up leaving my Eureka when I moved out of my apt with my ex, I've been hunting for a new vacuum. I don't really like the Oreck that my landlord left for me in my apartment.

I've been Dyson hunting, and today I got a bite. Woot's got a refurb DC25 for $250, $200 less than retail. YOINK. I'll tell you how it goes.

Our cleaning lady at work has a Dyson, she swears that if anyone ever touches it she'll disembowel them.

I'm going to super bump this ancient thread to throw in our recent purchase, a Shark Navigator Lift-Away Pro

http://www.sharkclean.com/Shark-Navigato...um-NV356E/

http://www.amazon.com/Shark-Navigator-Pr...ewpoints=1

Running $200 Canadian, it's a upright, bag-less vacuum with a clone of Dyson's never-loose-suction system.
It's lightweight-ish, quiet-ish, insanely powerful (we're talking clean paths in our rug vs our old hoover), very good on pet hair and it separates into a hand-held canister for doing stairs and furniture.

Parts are inexpensive and only the washable filters need ever be replaced. The Hepa filter is nice, even though we don't have allergies, it greatly reduces pet smells. Our house is noticeably less cat stinky.
Apparently it can do floors as well with an included attachment, but haven't tried it yet.

While the power cord is nice a long, the hose is a little short when in canister mode.

I'll give it 4/5.
