Just started playing this, still on disk one.
So many things in the world/level design make me facepalm so hard so far (like that totally stupid "security prision escape" section in the white ship where you have to avoid eye bots), but damn... Let's just say I just got done reading through "Letters from a Weakling", and wow... powerful. That "Thousand Years of Dreams" story blurb hit me right at home. I'm still thinking about it and it's been an hour since I've put the controller down. It's got it's minor frustrations (mostly in the level design department) but when it shines it's really good. I can't believe I thought the dream sequences were initially boring and too long, they are just so well written. Glad I decided to jump into it, this is the first JRPG I'm seriously playing since Grandia 2 on the dreamcast (it's normally a genre that bores me to tears). |

The dreams are hands down the best part, and very very sad :'(
Disk 1 - Looked Promising, lots of reminders of FFIV, V, and VI strewn about Disk 2 - So/So, a bit downhill, but still not bad Disk 3 - Disk 4 - Â Sig by Joel |

Don't crush my hopes and dreams caf D:
Maybe I should snap disk 3 and 4 in half so I pretend the good lasts forever and that disk 2 is just a "cliffhanger ending" or something |

[/quote] All of them I'm not personally controlling I don't mind the active battle system, but it always seems like Im the one doing 75% of the damage while everyone else hurf-derps around either just healing or getting the occasional hit in. Was a huge problem in Star Ocean: End of Time on the PS2, one person I'm controlling spends 75% of the battle spamming on technique while everyone else sits in the corner and picks their noses. I wish I could pause and assign actions or like SoM, just have two people be magic bots that I can pause and queue a spell up on while the guy with the sword proceeds to rape face. Â Sig by Joel |

I meant which one (tales of vesperia or lost odyssey,) but I can definitely feel what your talking about, while I loved it in Persona 3, I'm really kind of worried about it in FF13; especially since there sticking with the three person party >.< |

Vesperia has the same kind of battle system as the other tales games and star ocean. FF13 also looks really really bad in terms of battles. I do NOT like having party members I can not control, huge no-no, at least in FFXII I could assign rudimentary scripting controls (still sucked though), of which vesperia has none, its like one of 4 choices - Attack with full force, Do support Shit, Hide in the corner, or hurp-derp  Sig by Joel |

I can't figure out why my expensive spells like Sleep, Poison, etc never work on enemies when I cast them (always says failed), and why I always "fail" fleeing even if I have the turn-tail shoes equipped. :-\
And on that note my poison rings, despite going through about 30 battles with them on my characters, never actually poisoned a single enemy. I'm beginning to wonder why these spells/status effects exsist for my characters to use if they never seem to work against any type of enemy or boss. I'm a little tired of having to rely on using Prisim for all my "higher costing" spell use. |

I found decent success with blind and there's one group of bosses late in the game that sleep owns the crap out of. Focus on buffing your own characters with shell/protect or whatever buffs attack and just have your physical characters beat the snot out of stuff. The casting times totally gimp most good spells until late in the game when you get a bunch of accessories and skill that are reduce casting time.  Sig by Joel |

Status Effects actually do shit. And yeah I'm totally with you Caff (and a little less excited about Vesperia ) It really sucks, as the rest of the battle system seems really intriguing. The one thing that might save it is that you can switch which of your three party members your controlling whenever (iirc,) but if that's the case, why not just let the player control them all of the time? ಠ_ಠ|

I <3ed this game til the last disc. I kept expecting a villain switch at the last minute a la Final Fantasy BUT NO IT WAS SOME STUPID MIDBOSS D: D: D:
Like seriously did the last boss ever even have any actual... motivation? There were some bit characters more fleshed out than him. O_o |

I did not like this game. I disagreed with a lot of the design choices, found the combat incredibly slow (this is from someone who loves turn based combat), and felt the plot was middling at best. I finally quit during a certain sequence in which I was forced to move extra slow (through a snowstorm) and got attacked about every six steps. I know many out there loved this thing as the second coming of JRPGs, but I just didn't see it.

Yeah I agree with you there the actual level design for this game is horrible, which really affects some of the pacing and such. Luckily so far the actual "action segements" of the game have appeared to be short and some of the other stuff is plenty good so it's held my interest. |
