I've been locked out of my Xbox Live account because the credit card I was using to pay became invalid and I never bothered to change it back assuming I would just switch to silver once my 12 months was up. Nope, I'm completely blocked out and my only option is to pay for another 12 months of Live. No option to pay for a smaller amount of time or just not pay at all. Problem with this is I'm pretty much broke at this point and I'm not sure if there will be any 'additional fees' I'll have to pay for. Which means I might overdraft on my card.

From my experience, I don't think you should ever use your credit card to get Gold. I got it for 12 months and wanted to cancel (since they don't tell beforehand that it automatically renews), and even though you can buy a Gold subscription with just three button presses directly from your Xbox, it takes half an hour on the phone to cancel it. If I ever get it again I'm just going to buy one of those 12-month cards instead. If you use one of those your account reverts back to Silver when you run out, and you can usually find them for $5-10 off.

If you use your CC and for whatever reason they can't charge your account becomes inactive which basically means they hold everything on that account hostage until you pay up including game saves I believe.
