Should I make the switch to x64 Win 7?

Herro all, Vlambo hurr at goddamn Uni.

So, I got a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate, and I contemplating switching my system to it. Currently I use a modified XP, with 3.0 Ghz Dual Core, with 2 GB of ram. I was wondering if my machine would be able to run Win 7 x64 to similar performance as my XP.

I can either bore you with a bunch of videos of people managing to run Windows 7 on netbooks, or I can just tell you it will work fine on your system.

Check all your hardware first, see if there are 64Bit Windows 7 drivers available.

I made that mistake, now I'm on 32bit Win7

Also, I'm using 2GB of ram just fine, although the other 2GB gets here on Monday, with my 25" HDLCD yay.

I made the switch to 32 bit Win7 last week. Its seems pretty awesome. No driver issues, except for my ancient webcam

Vista is sadness.

XP is retro-cool.

I made the switch on my gaming rig, then went and installed it on my HTPC, laptop, other laptop, and my girlfriend's laptop. Some of the HomeGroup features are pretty slick, even if they were _possible_ with earlier versions of windows, the integration is fantastic.

W7 manages itself better than Vista, but still takes up plenty of system RAM. If you want to keep free of hitches for optimal performance 3gb+ is a sweet spot to aim for.

it depends on what you do with your computer. in general 4gb is where you start to have severely diminished returns, unless your work or hobbies can really make use of the extra 4gigs (think photoshop or video-editing, notsomuch videogaming)

Im using windows 7 ultimate 64-bit with just 2 gigs of ram and a 3.0ghz dual core processor (were like brothers). Switching over (from windows xp media center edition) did nothing to change my performance noticeably either negatively or positively (my boots time improved 5 fold though).

I would assume high quality render CADing would fall under the list of things that would be good for more ram.

If I knew the price of RAM would go so high from last fall to now, I would have bought another 4 gigs, my same 4 GB DDR3 I got in fall, is up over $20!

for anyone else thinking about switching over to 64 bit OS, there is another advantage that gets overlooked often: there's no rootkits (virus things) for x64 .. yet.
