I'm working on a similar project where we are planning to replace all our workstations with PCoIP terminals; low-cost, multimonitor support, transparent USB forwarding.
Only problem is the licensing. Between VMWare's cut, Microsoft also has a special fee per virtual workstation. Makes it hard to compete with Dell/HP's corp workstation packages.

dont know about overhead,
i did a hobobuild and have a dedicated computer just for running 1 VM, i want to use the snapshot feature to roll back win xp installs since i plan on infecting this VM with serveral virii.
reason why VM instead of acronis: im going to share it with a couple colleagues at work and going to give them the teamviewer backdoor so they can do their own snapshot resets.
currently the Remote desktop connetion (built into windows) frontend is nice , but the mouse is out of sync making thing a bit of a pain in the ass.
