I attended the funeral for my grandfather at Arlington National Cemetary today. The vault in the columbarium he's in is in the wall outside, you can see Washington National Monument and the Pentagon while standing in front of it. I kept it together until the 21-gun salute and taps, and just broke down.

I really shouldn't be wasting what time I have posting here, but I need to vent.

Today has not gone well. The morning was ok; I got out of bed--rather tired--and attended my Chinese class. Got back from it and found in an email that I owe my school more money. The way my education is paid for is through a couple of 529 accounts and a Coverdell account, managed by my grandparents. They are fairly old-fashioned people, and as such do not own a computer. As a result, the procedure to pay for my tuition is complicated as the withdrawal documents have to be snail-mailed across the country twice. Unfortunately, it looks like this time my grandparents elected to withdraw a few thousand dollars less than was needed. Now I have to talk to my folks and get this sorted out before I get a financial hold on my student account.

I read some biology work and ate lunch, then went to my biology class for the first lecture of the quarter. I suddenly realized that this class will probably be a waste of time; the instructor announced that it was oriented towards nonmajors (I'm a biochemistry major) and then spent the rest of the 80 minutes talking about how "evolution is important". Sure, it's true, but that means that the whole reading on DNA transcription and translation was pointless. To make things worse, a "friend", who initially recommended the class to me on the basis that "I would be taking it" decided to ignore me and sit with some other friends. This girl in particular seems to have been particularly cold to me recently--for example, two days ago, when everyone was at library together, she suggested that most of the group leave before I finish printing my documents (a process which would have taken literally 2 minutes). When I finished doing so, I came outside to find they were gone. I tried phoning them, but got no response. As it turned out, this girl had everyone else ignore my fucking calls, so I ended up standing outside in chilly weather for 20 minutes wondering what the fuck happened. Goddamn it.

So I finish up Biology and realize I have to print some documents my Chinese-Lit instructor e-mailed me. I print it out and it looks kind of hefty. I get back to my room and start looking through the assignment, to realize that he's making us write about 1000 words worth of essays as our first fucking assignment, due tomorrow. In addition, he wants us to come up with several meaningful discussion questions, answer several questionnaires, and do all of this while applying incredibly vague close reading strategies he barely outlined the day before. When I got done reading the assignment, I got pissed off and slammed my fist onto my desk. Unfortunately, I struck my glass mousepad which shattered into hundreds of fragments. I don't think I hit it that hard, but it was annihilated, and I got some glass shrapnel in my hand. The mousepad in question was an Icemat which my brother had bought for me a couple of years before, and which I presume was rather expensive. I spent the past 20 minutes cleaning it up, only to find I didn't do a good enough job when I checked the table for more shrapnel and got several cuts on my palm and fingers.

Fuck all of this. See you later, I've got to spend the rest of the night writing bullshit and digging glass out of my hand.

Well, after doing some research into the nature of the class, I elected to take the easy way out and swap the literature class for a class on public speaking. It will honestly have more value to me as a student who aspires to someday enter the medical field, though it doesn't meet any requirements at all for my major, minors, or general graduation. Ah well, it's not worth taking a class that's completely tangential to my major and that will probably sink my GPA and general happiness. As for my hand, it's not so bad. I tweezer'd out all the fragments I could find, used some antibiotic cream and bandaged it.

I think taking a class that you WANT to take instead of need to might be a nice change. And maybe it will help you stand up for yourself a little? It sounds like some of those friends are total dicks, and there's no reason you should have to take that kind of treatment. You're too awesome.
