Since I'm graduating high school, my parents are going to buy me a laptop as a gift.  Problem is, I'm going to have to give up my current gaming rig before I go to college.  So I need something powerful yet not ridiculously expensive.  Any recommendations?

i get the feeling that you posted here first without even looking for one on your own.

why don't you post some that you've found, and we can give you pros / cons for each instead.

Why would you have to give up your gaming rig?if there's anyway you could keep it that is by far the way to go with gaming. If you do end up getting a gaming laptop size matters, bigger is better just so you can avoid as many overheating problems as possible

I would love to be able to keep it, unfortunately that's not an option.  Since when my sisters went to college they gave up their $200 piece of shit computer, my parents are demanding that I do the same with my rig.

My budget is most definitely less than $2000, probably closer to $1000.  So far I've seen this and its downgraded cousin.  The only major difference I see is the i7 processor.  Personally I doubt the upgrade is worth $500.  What kind of performance boost would an i7 bring?

No wai.

You're going to carry your rig to your dorm room.

And then maybe buy a $300-400 netbook for notetaking, basic web functions, and typing crap up on the go.

give it up for who/what exactly? It's not going to collect dust in a corner at home just for the sake of being fair is it?

My little brother doesn't have a computer.  It doesn't matter that he's only 11, he MUST HAVE ONE.  Also my mother takes great pleasure in restricting my ability to game.

And it wouldn't make sense financially to get your little bro a cheap desktop and you a netbook while you keep the gaming rig as well?

You can also tell your parents how helping your little brother build his own computer will [insert BS here].

Tell them you don't know if you can find all of your porn to clean it off before he has it. Honestly that's a pretty big waste, by the time he is old enough to appreciate it it will be terribly obsolete.

I love i7 but in this case I don't know that it's worth that much of a price difference from an i5. You're also paying for Blu-ray usability (which I personally find useless, although others may disagree). If you were to pick one of those two, definitely get the latter.

Carrying an 18in beast kind of defeats the purpose of having a portable computer.  :-\

Not a bad idea, will try but I doubt it will go down well.

I meant it as a reason that they wouldn't want to give it to an 11 year old.
