its been really bad.  signal strength looks fine, but when i try to load something it will just load and load and load and finally snap into working.  same goes for tf2.  the game will start to time out, but soon work again.



any ideas where to start? ((((((((

How so? Cat 5 has nearly ten times the functional distance that a COTS wifi router does and 1/nth the amount of attenuation.

In either case, run something like (ping -n 10000 google.com) and (ping -n 10000 <your first router IP here>) and look for packet loss. You should have <3% to google and 0% to your first router.
Latency to your router should be <10ms unless you are going through a media converter (modem) in which case <30ms is fine.

Try to figure out where your problems are coming from. Since I have a very poor opinion of consumer wireless hardware and more-so their drivers, I suggest you go with a physical connection (even if temporary) to start your diagnostics.

y internet had been alot like this lately. i had the cable guy turn in and it actually turns out most of my splitters(or something no idea what exactly they are called) weren't set to work the the new digital cable transition or something and my internet shouldn't have worked at all

Oh yeah, don't forget to call your ISP and have them check the levels on your modem (if you have a modem of some sort), as they can detect line noise/loss from their end. Corroded coax/twistedpair sucks.

well the latency to google is around 40-45ms except every once and awhile theres a ridiculous one of like 3000ms.  everything to my router is under 10 except for a ridiculous thing like that too.

Bypass the wireless and plug your PC directly into the router (you may have to move the PC) and try again. If you still get spikes off the router you likely have something wrong with it. Check for a firmware upgrade. Worst (best ) case you may have to build a PC-based router (like PFSense) and convert the wifi router into a bridge.
