My 1TB Seagate HDD took a shit on me. Less than 1 year since I bought it. I also just found out that somewhere along the line my exteral HDD got unplugged from the computer so it hasn't been backing itself up.

It's not a gen 11 drive, is it?
Yes, check the serial number on it, if its got .11 at the end, its a known issue and may be salvageable
I'll check it when I get home. Even if it is truely dead, it's still under warranty. I wonder if this is the source of my TF2 issues. (Randomly freezing, lagging, crashing)

Some .12s are also effected.

Please check the serial against: https://apps1.seagate.com/rms_af_srl_chk/

It's sorta sad when a manufacturer needs to have a webpage to cross-reference serials to see if you have a HD that shouldn't have ever been shipped in the 1st place.

Upon further investigation, I'm leaning towards this being RAM related instead of HDD. But HDD still isn't ruled out.

If you have an external enclosure, remove the Hard drive, put it in the enclosure and try it with another PC

well i ended up RMAing my hard drives. Just got 1 of my 2 bad ones back (had another bricked one laying around). Have to install XP for the time being since I can't find my product info for Win7 ( >Sad)

But now my computer isn't seeing my internet connection. I'm going to run the motherboards CD first to see if it's just the drivers that have to be installed. If that doesn't work then i'm just taking the whole thing out back and putting 10mm rounds into it until dead.

Remember XP isn't so awesome when it comes to integrated peripherals like 7 is, it won't detect them and you'll need said mobo CD.

God I don't miss parts of XP at all.

yeah, i got everything working last night. Only problem i'm having now is that it wont restart. If you shut the computer off and then back on it starts up normally. But if you hit restart (or something reboots it like after installing something). It gets hung up on my startup screen. (Motherboards logo pops up with "hit DEL to go into BIOS screen" then just stays there.

i've been dealing with this nag for a while Dtrain.  once on my dads computer , once on mine.

pop out the CMOS battery and popp it back in , do your settings again (time and date and boot priority optimization)  and see if that fixes the problem.

I had that happen to me on my old mobo, if anything was connected to IDE2 it wouldn't POST.

There's a reason WD is the only one to try doing 10K RPM consumer drives.

They suck.

That was to be expected?

Ive had a normal WD drive fail on me, the one difference being it was 6 years old, and continued to function while giving my the obvious warning signs of "really loud noises", so I got all my data off in time.

now you're starting to contradict yourself.
it would have been easier if you just said nothing at all.

Re-read topic , any idea how to flash the firmware update without the PC seeing it ?

Only if you JTAG the board with an appropriate programmer.

You can flash the hard drive without Windows seeing it using the bootable CD image, available from the same page as the Windows-based firmware tool.
