i obviously dont, so thats why im comin to you guys. because you're fucking awesome, and stuff.

he gave me some weird tips though: he wants to be able to run starcraft 2, period. i think SC2 will be easy to run and i say give him something that will run SC2 like a fucking beast on steroids

Uh, if he has no idea how to go about building his computer and you don't have similar technical know-how to guide him, it may be a safer option to go pre-assembled.

You can't beat self-building for a learning experience, but it doesn't sound like that matters in this case. These sites are pretty reasonable in terms of pricing, plus you get warrantees. Check Toms Hardware for picking out individual parts. It's not too hard, and you might be able to back up your claims about knowing things about computer hardware with only an hour or two of research.

well one of his friends recently got his computer built as well, but for a lower price and lower specs, so thats why im here asking you guys because you truly do know a lot

Only most computer parts are cheaper in Canada then the states due to our import dutys.

Aight, so I have, yet again, arbitrarily tossed together some parts that seem to be half decent and are probably perfectly compatible with each other.

Graphics: Radeon HD 5850
Power: Thermaltake 675W PSU
DVD/CD: Some random Samsung
Case: Antec 300
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Black 750GB
RAM: CORSAIR XMS3 4GB DDR3 1600
CPU and Mobo: AMD 965 quad core and ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3

Total: ~$1065 Canadian
Notes: The graphics card I chose is a bit pricey, so money could be shaved off there easily. 750GB should be more than enough hard drive space. PSU is also likely overkill and isn't exactly as cheap as it could be, but I'd rather not get something that won't fail and set the house on fire. I can vouch for the CPU being awesome, and the mobo it comes with seems excellent as well. 4GB of speedy RAM should be plenty, and it should play nice with the mobo. As far as the case goes, the Antec 300 seems popular, has decent cooling, and has a neutral design. Basically, the case can be as big, small, flashy, or plain as you like. It's personal preference.

I've never had a single issue with ATI (5 computers in my house running on ATI graphics), so I don't know what everyone is bitching about.

Also, feel free to help out by recommending a build of your own, or telling the OP to fuck off and just buy a Dell or something. Because Dell desktops are the best things money can buy.

What exactly is your vision of what kind of threads should populate the computer section?

my AMD/ATI combo came out pretty great. Only trouble I had was with the catalyst 10.6 drivers for the graphics card that wouldn't let me use the manual fan control. So, I went back to the 10.4 and now everything is great.

I don't know anything about CrossFire, but scar11 has SLI'd 8800GT, and he is underwhelmed by the performance boost over just one card. He reports a 10-fps increase across some games, with others showing no improvement (I guess no support for multiple rendering). But along with that came the large increase in power consumption and heat. Even though he got the card from me for free, he's thinking about moving off from it.

So no, I would stay away. It doesn't seem cost-effective at all. That card looks good; a little high-end for my wallet but you can't argue with those review scores.

If he decides that his GPU budget can reach 400 dollars, it would be good to look at two GTX 460's. Benchmarks place it at around an 80 to 90 percent FPS increase over a single card which for around $430 total can nearly match an 800 dollar dual 5870 rig or a 5970 which is around $650. I mean, that is pretty bad ass... Make sure to look for the 1GB version though.
