It was. Right now the terrain is set to infinitely generate (Alpha/Ex-Infdev) as you explore. The old limited terrain generating system (Ex-Indev) was taken out a while ago but should soon be implemented back into the current game as an alternative to the infinite maps.

* Signs no longer require a free block above them when placing them
