Oh hi this thread.

Can anyone recommend a badass/fun to read graphic novel for me?  I'd prefer if it came in an anthology so I don't have to buy a million tiny books, I really liked Watchmen, Sin City, and 300.  Never bothered to go out and look for other comics, so recommendations appreciated thanks.

Everything Surf mentioned (including Y: The Last Man and Ex Machina), plus:

Powers
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (1000x better than the shit movie)
I Kill Giants
Astro City
Scott Pilgrim

And that's just the non-mainstream-superhero stuff.

You found a copy of I Kill Giants! Be honest did you cry at the end. I know I did.

I've never liked comic books.  WAIT.  Before you hate on me:

I love the stories and the characters found in comic books, and I love the history of the comic book industry.  They have just never been able to do it for me though.  I won't get into the debate now.  I did, however, want to mention that I just picked up issue 1 and 2 of The Sixth Gun.  I've been anticipating this release for awhile, and wanted to know if anyone else had picked it up or intends to (or grabbed it back on Free Comic Book Day).

Booster Gold Volume 2 is the best thing that ever happened to mainstream superhero comics since the Giffen/DeMatteis Justice League.

If you like Superhero comicbooks, chances are that you're already reading it. If you like Superheroes but you're too lazy to learn backrounds, go read this right now!

Maybe, the only backround you'll need are the 52 numbers of "52" (which is awesome too), but besides that, everything is really well explained and detailed

This is a pretty dense discussion of comics.

the game is absolutely amazing too only played the first two levels since I want to get some friends together to play it but OMGGGG SO MUCH FANGASM.

spoilers kinda, it happens in the first 5 minutes of the first level, but there's a subspace portal that you enter to skip an annoying part of the level. it's a rainbow road homage, as well as there being coin blocks in each subspace portal. and flying piggie banks.  and the world map is an homage to the smb3 world map.

What should I read first?

Joker
[Image: jokercover.jpg]

or

The Killing Joke
[Image: the_killing_joke.jpg]

(First time reading either of them)

Also, what's a good place to start with John Constantine?  The character interests me, and I've heard good things... I just don't know where to start.  Let me know what I should read to get HOOKED, and not to just start at the beginning if it's not going to be of quality to dominate my interest.

Killing joke is a classic, thought the writting is a little old fashioned in retrospect.

Joker is good, but i don't remember a thing about it.  I remember enjoying the art quite a bit and Azzarello is a good writer overall. Also, though i don't think it was on the vertigo imprint, it brought in some gore.

Would you recommend one over the other?

If you want a good Story, go for Joker. If you want a classic, go with The Killing Joke.

To be honest i think TKJ is a bit overrated on it's "classic" status. I know it did stuff no other mainstream superhero comic have had before that was included on the main canon, but for today standards,  it falls a little weak when showing the action. Also,  while i don't mind having 11+ panels per page, i know a lot of people who find this a little annoying.

In other note, TKJ is like 12 pages long :b, and the hasrdcover edition is like.. 25, so don't expect a long read out of it.

Definitely read The Killing Joke first, but Joker was also quite good.

Just to throw in my 2 cents: Everybody says Killing Joke is a classic, but when I read it I was thoroughly underwhelmed by it all, and disappointed after reading it. I really liked The Dark Knight though. :\
