I would take the heat and noise output of a single card over double cards, if at all possible.

Notice, if you will, that the 460's in SLI are both quieter and cooler than other $400+ configurations. Feeling generous? I think this one's the one.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6814130566 If you get this, remember to register it for Warranty within 30 days for a lifetime warranty guarantee. EVGA provides tools on their site for easy overclocking that is covered by the warranty as well. The cards are also eligible for a free copy of Cryostasis and the Newegg promotion includes Just Cause 2. Last thing, when getting your card registered at EVGA, use my affiliate code :3 LLX-0PB-2W94 Feeling generous? I'm fine with my 5870 and would prefer a single card, but it's good to see that SLI is getting better.

After discussing it with some family and friends, I just bought two of the EVGA, 1GB, non-overclocked cards, with the lifetime warranty.
It'll probably arrive Friday, I'll update you guys when it does. |

If you want a seriously good stresser, just go launch Crysis and max it all out.

Tomshardware has done a great comparison showing how 460's in SLI stack up against the 480, 5870, and a single 460. It is a great way to see how the technology is evolving. Also, We are getting really close to the sub $500 graphics card configuration capable of running max Crysis at 60fps with 4x AA at 1920 x 1080. It will be kind of exciting to finally break that barrier.

So far, these graphics cards have been a disappointment. To begin with, the plastic casing was flush with the metal faceplate, which wouldn't be a problem if it weren't for the fact that my case uses a screwless system to secure PCI cards that consists of a swinging and locking door which clamps onto the inside of the faceplate. No space for the door to fit, no way to close it, no way to secure my cards. Tried using force to bend the casing and fit the prongs in, nope. Tried cutting the prongs out of my case, nope, still wouldn't fit. Started filing down the plastic casing, but that wasn't too effective. Had to remove the faceplate and defile my brand new 240 dollar cards with a band saw and it finally fit.
The framerate on everything is good. Quite good. Unfortunately, not good enough that I can play everything on max settings on everything at 1920x1080 and still get 60+ fps (I get about 60fps in Crysis on high, 4x AA; not ultra ). I was sort of hoping in this day and age that would be possible. Oh well, the majority of my games will run at max everything with at least 40fps, which isn't perceivably different for me. However, I didn't consider how problematic SLI was to begin with. Since installing the cards, almost every game I play has an issue of some sort. Starcraft II has a problem with SLI involving transparent shadows that would randomly drop my framerate to 10-20. Had to disable them. APB wasn't designed to make use of SLI/Crossfire in the first place, I get black flickering and invisible or glowing players when I have SLI on. TF2/L4D2 and presumably every source game has this weird thing where non-moving objects cast shadows that flicker in place. I have yet to try out many of my other games, we'll see how those go. I understand that the drivers are kinda new, so I'm hoping things will get better over time. It's just really frustrating to go through spending a lot of money and some effort to get an effectively poorer gaming experience. |
