I know the article was about religious knowledge, but I do have to wonder how Religious people fare vs. atheists in general intelligence.

I dunno. I mean, Da Vinci was Catholic, and he was one of the greatest minds of all time. Showing similar threads, Einstein had a deep spiritual belief too.
