But in all seriousness, you should probably get a gun.

And leave your outside lighting on.  And tripwires.  And a dog.

Well they can't get a gun, but turn on all your outside lights, and lock your doors/windows

Everything is closed and as locked as it can get, and the motion lights are on outside at night.

Honestly a dog is not a terrible idea, even a friendly one will bark the shit out of a stranger. That should be enough to discourage all but the most homicidal of assholes. And if you got one of them I don't know what you can do less than a gun.

I don't have the time or desire to care for a dog: both of us are often out of the house at one time or another, and I prefer cats. I also know that I hate it when my neighbour's dog won't shut the fuck up.... I don't want to do that to my neighbours. Or my cat.

Also if I used it on a guy or even threatened him with it, I think I could actually get sued and would probably lose. Like HeK said... cops look the other way usually but not always. It's a bit strange...

I don't think anyone showed up last night anyway. I checked a few times from the windows in the dark and saw nothing, but I'll have a look now that it's day and see what's what. Probably nothing, it's not likely he'll be back this soon, if at all.

all a .22 is gonna do is tickle the guy before he chases you down anyways. :\

canada is silly about gun laws, but then again I imagine you have much less of an issue with gun violence, no?

[/quote]our house of commons, after deciding to support to destroy the long gun registry, decided to vote against destroying it, because our parties our fucktwats and it's really starting to piss me off that the conservatives think that nothing gets done with a majority government and the liberals, ndp, and bloc quebecois are just fucking around with the government because they're not in power as a coalition and shit

i fucking hate canada politics for the past three or four years

Honestly I think it's less "dude is gonna steal my crap while I'm not home" and more "dude knows I'm home and he's still staring." Definitely power on ALL the lights to make it very inhospitable for creeping, and keep something near you at all times. Another suggestion is to not play TF2 with a headset tonight- let all those gunshots ring out. It adds a bit of intimidation.

I don't care how badass someone is, if you start getting hit by 36gr chunks of solid lead in a solid copper jacket moving in excess of 1,500 FPS, you're going to stop what you're doing and attempt to run like a little bitch

My first instinct was to booby-trap the area the person is guessed to be creeping.  Burying a bed of nails in the dirt outside the window, screws glued to the window sill, and maybe some tripwire (for actual tripping, not tripwire for setting off one of Crow's mines).  Is this advisable?

Also, is there anything you can do with your gate?  You mentioned that is how the person seems to have gotten in before.  Is there no lock?  Maybe the person is choosing your yard because of its easy access?  Make it more of a challenge, and maybe they'll move on.

If the dude gets hurt, it's gonna be their fault for it happening, and it'll leave them open to suit. Which is stupid as fuck btw.

I refuse to put stuff in the flower bed as a booby trap since I use it for gardening. The last thing I want is to find a bunch of sharp things missed in there when digging in the spring.

I'm also not screwing things to the window sills in case there's a fire or something and WE need to escape. That's a bit harsh.

As for our gate, it's not that it's easy to open. The fence could just as easily be jumped over, it's not that hight. I think we have plans to change the whole thing out eventually, but even our neighbour with a 6 foot+ fence had the guy in his yard. If he wants in, he's getting in. There's no real point in locking ours. He could fall over it if he wanted to.

And yes, if we did these things to our house and the guy got hurt, we'd be in serious shit.

I don't know how it is in Canada but traditionally a duty is not owed to trespassers, has to be some other circumstances. But deliberately laying a trap actually might near that. I need to study duty some more.

It would NOT fly.

If it were found that someone were injured or had died because of some traps we'd left laying around... we'd be absolutely fucked. If we put up a warning sign (and I'm not joking at all) we'd probably be fine; but that's just fucking ridiculous.

Yea you are right, it would probably be an intentional tort/criminal act so duty would no longer be relevant. But I'm still curious at how him being a trespasser would effect things. Maybe I should ask my torts teacher.

my gf's had a sore/scratchy throat for the last week or so. Last night we went to Busch Gardens, and it got so bad that she was having trouble breathing. I ended up taking her to the hospital as soon as we got home, and her tonsils were so swollen they were obstructing her breathing and making it very difficult to swallow. She ended up getting a shot of antibiotics and steroids in her butt and some oral antibiotics to take for the next week, but christ that was fucking scary. No insurance, and she was choking on her own tonsils. She needs them taken out but they won't do it because she's got a Factor V clotting disorder and she'd be a super high risk for surgery :/
