I'm having flashbacks. It's the Zima craze of 1997 all over again.

Ex roomate who is having a midlife crisis and moved out of our apartment (perhaps permanently) and away from his once-fiance is coming over to take back his 360 tomorrow (he left just about everything a month ago behind and said he'd come back to get his stuff on a need/want-to-get basis).

And I wanted to play the new Assassin's Creed game over the break... guess I'll have to get my open world assassin fix somehow in some other way.

I have a question.

Lets just say I had a date (movie, dinner, etc) with a lady friend of mine tomorrow, we've been friends for a long time and lately we've been talking more, and I get home from a walk around the farm park and I found a AIM message from her, saying "Sorry, My sister just dropped in, have to cancel the movie/dinner."

Am I wrong to think that this is her kinda blowing me off politely? I know I have the capacity for negativity, but it's not even one of those situations, this is more just seeing a pattern.

I don't see how that's her blowing you off unless you've been trying to do this for the past month or two and the situation you describe keeps happening. If so, she isn't worth your time as she obviously wouldn't be too compatable due to the kind of person she is (fair-weather ditchy types) on a serious level.

Offer rescheduling, using an exact date that would be apropreate for the both of you. If she ignores or declines, then she's not interested on that level.

Dude's got some good points. Once is coincidence. Twice is happenstance. Three times is enemy action.

My job is a giant pile of shit.

Almost all of last week they gave me no shifts. Since my old manager quite and new management moved into place, I've had no shifts at all. I was told it was because they needed the hours to train the new managers and while it sucked I imagined it might only be for one week or so. That seemed somewhat likely.

I'd been pestering them the last few days of last week about when the new schedule would be up. The old one ended saturday and I still didn't know. Finally today I asked and she said the same thing. I have no shifts for you this week.

I flipped a bit, cried a bit. Asked her why they were hiring new staff and giving them hours if permanent part time staff had no hours. She said she was "hiring my staff to do it my way". I asked her if that meant I was being fired. She said no. I asked her again what was going on and she just said that she's doing what head office told her to do.

Fucking bullshit lies. I'm pretty sure they want to get rid of all the previous staff because they didn't like my old manager but that they can't fire me because I haven't done anything wrong. They can't lay me off either because they're hiring new staff and have no reason to. So they're hoping I'll just fuck off and do it for them.

If I didn't have this temp job last week and a bit of this week I'd be totally fucked. I have a job interview this week finally, but still... this is getting to be absolutely retarded. I hope that this new job pans out. I hope that the e-mail I sent to the employment standards office will give me some new insight into whether or not there is anything I can do about this.

I don't want to say look on the bright side, but hey, at least you have job experience. I've been sending out both hand-written and online applications for almost two years now, calling employers attempting to land an interview, and I've only gotten two interviews. Only one of those interviews called back and told me I was unneeded. And while I sit here unemployed, I get to see more and more retards(not being egotistic here, they're about as dumb as they come) from my school get jobs that I applied for multiple times months in advance. I know it's really REALLY cliched, but, you gotta be thankful for what you have.

At least you have some experience and references to show to employers. Best of luck on landing that job.

Sadly, experience does not pay my student loans. I know that will sound catty but that's not my intent. It means nothing if I can't use it to my advantage.

Got a hold of my co-worker from that job, also hired by my old boss. This girl was fired today with no warning and no reason. They wouldn't give her a reason for being dismissed immediately. Another girl from the old staff is getting the same as me; no shifts.

This is going to be a huge deal apparently.

I don't know what to tell you other than that sucks. Talk to a lawyer. I'm sure Canadia has an equivalent to Legal Aid that'll allow you to talk to a lawyer for low/no cost.

The labour board is the best approach probably. I'm going to wait and see what the co worker who's actually been fired says, and in the mean time I've e-mailed employment standards to ask advice and what my employer is and is not entitled to do with shifts and firing etc.

Thanks though. Hopefully this goes well.

If business law is anything like it is here, they can't legally fire someone with no rhyme or reason like that. Take it to the board, and rough 'em up.

A few years ago, I had to go to the state labor board because I hadn't gotten a paycheck. My bosses were blaming some faceless HR person in Denver and passing the buck around. I stopped showing up to work and called them. 2 Days later the check magically showed up at the office.

Now I believe that an employer should be able to hire/fire at will with any criteria they see fit but I also believe that an employer should at the very least deal with their employees in good faith and it seems like that isn't happening.

My advice is to not quit. Let them fire you. Then you can at least get unemployment. If you don't have any documented issues, they'll be hard pressed justifying denying it to you.

If they have "at will" employment, they certainly can fire with no rhyme or reason.

I found out today what the deal was.

Turns out, I was right, I knew already but this turned went from 99% sure, to 100% when I heard it from her. Apparently, she accepted it as, not a date, but a get-together, and she realized a day later that I might have taken it that way. She came up with the excuse, and wanted to get a hold of me to apologize, but this is getting down to the wire with term papers and finals here, so no time on her part and no time on mine. The only reason she saw me today was happenstance; we both were out buying stuff for our families.  She said, and I qoute, "I do care about you(as if this wasn't enough), but like a bigger brother", and the worst part of this is she hugged me, which normally I mind, especially when you shoot me down, but I let her do it because I can't get mad at her for reasons I'm not publishing.

It's at this point in my life that I'm not in a billowing rage, and I'm not hysterically sad, but I'm just frustrated and tired.

Yeah, how dare she hug you.

Shame on her!

Seriously though, it does suck, but don't act like you're a kid.

Thing is I won't get unemployment from it. I can't. I haven't been working there long enough to collect anything.

I'm not going to quit, at least not yet. I'm waiting to see what happens when the co worker who just got fired from there yesterday (another person from prior management) calls the labour board and I get an answer to my e-mail.

I've taken a job for wrongful dismissal and won before with a nice payout. I'm not afraid to try this again.
