Thinking about rebuilding my rig on Black Friday, but I don't have a clue whats 'the thing' these days. You guys use AMD or Intel nowadays? What's the gold standard on GPUs? If I can get those two set, I'm sure I can find an ASUS mobo that supports them and go from there.

Well first off, what kind of performance are you looking for? Personally, I'd use the chart in this thread so you can see what you want and seek out savings from there.

Mid-to-high level gaming performance. I'd like to be able to run current games at my monitor's native resolution (1280x1024), instead of 800x600 like I currently have to use for F:NV

Currently I've got an AMD64 2.4GHz dual core, 4gb dual-channel DDR2 RAM, and an GeForce 8600GTS mounted in an ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe Vista Edition. I was originally looking to upgrade the processor, but the mobo's AM2+ only, not AM3, so just pulling a triple-core isn't really an option. Since I've gotta upgrade the mobo to upgrade the processor, I need new RAM and might as well get a new GPU.

intel. i7-920/930 sounds good. surf being worried about his 920's temp being in the 40s makes me both lol and sad inside because of my phenom II idling upper 50s at its absolute coolest. Sad

though in january/february intel's releasing their new procs and i've heard their $300 hexcore will outperform their current $1000 hexcore

spore likes his radeon 5870. i don't know much about their 6xxx stuff.

The midrange 6870's and 6850's are pretty mindblowing. Regardless, at that resolution, you don't need anything like that. Seriously. Work on the monitor first.

I don't like how all of the new ones are widescreen, and most have fewer vertical lines than what I have. Plus what I'm running is 2x19" at that resolution (so really it's what, 2560x1024), so its not like I'm hurting for screenspace right now. I have a 24" widescreen at work and honestly it hurts my eyes and two of them side-by-side would eat my desk whole, so I'm not too interested in dropping cash on new monitors right now. If I want to watch movies, I use my HDTV.

how does it hurt your eyes

standing by my previous recommendations, though maybe get a 6850 instead of a 6870, quantity of VRAM is not important on a lowres monitor like that (this is not the basis of my 6850 instead of 6870 recommendation)

Tough to say. I think it's mainly that in order to put it far enough away to not get neck strain, everything on it gets so small it hurts my eyes.

Also, scratch what I said about monitors, because I may be losing one of my 19"ers soon. So I just bought one of these for $149. And for the record, 1080p isn't that much larger than what I was working with.

1280x1024 is less than 2/3 the resolution of 1920x1080, unless you meant it wasn't much larger solely based on vertical pixels.

also, that is a good monitor and i want one just to play fighting games on.

Now that it's sitting on my desk, I can see that its a pretty big improvement. 23" widescreen is _slightly_ smaller than the 19" in terms of physical vertical size, which isn't a huge deal I guess.

They also sent me two by mistake, I'm debating mounting the other one Portrait to use as my secondary instead of my 19". Thoughts?

They sent two but they double charged me. So not as lucky as you thought. But it was supposed to be a limit one deal, so pretty lucky regardless. Pay me what I paid + shipping to get it to you and its yours.
