True Grit was really good. Shockingly violent for a PG-13 movie. I mean, this is probably about as violent as There Will Be Blood (and possibly more-so), yet TWBB was rated R.

You can kill as many people as you want and get a pg-13, but any sexuality, cursing, or (not limited to) drug-use without consequence will land you an r.

Any male on male sex scenes or any exposure of male sex organs will get you an nc-17, though females will only get you r. 

In the case of recently released Blue Valentine, the movie got an nc-17 rating for showing sex in a loveless marriage as unenjoyable. fancy that, good thing they appealed.

The MPAA is full of utter bull-shit.
