Sounds like it's gonna be a pretty pricey product.  If the 3DS is gonna be 250, I'm gonna say it's about 300 to 350 for the PSP2.  It's out this holiday season.

Can't say I'm super interested in it, even with the touting of it being basically a handheld PS3.  The PSP failed pretty much for me, just never picking up at all.  It had a game or two I wouldn't mind playing, but not enough to warrant keeping it, having sold mine pretty early on after getting it cause I'm a pretty impulsive buyer lol

It'll mostly depend on the games it has coming out.  An Uncharted title and Monster Hunter isn't much to excite me lol

- Will it have a library worth mentioning this time?

Or

- Will it be as easy to hack and homebrew as the PSP

a. probably with all the rehashes off of the PS3, since thats pretty much all they showed during the conference (i watched it, stupid moon language)
b. with the ps3 recently being hacked, im expecting sony to double up its efforts, especially since its 3G capable as well

honestly there's no fucking way i could see this releasing lower than 350, with all the touch screens they have on there, the two cameras, the OLED, dual joysticks (which people jizz about for some reason, i still honestly dont see it), the graphics, and the 3G connection (that lets your friends stalk you, lolol), im expecting 375-450. there's no god damn way i can see it being possible, and once again people wont develop much for it because it will take a decade to make one good game for it instead of a year. once again, sony amazes people with its new technology, but it still sucks

I think the problem has always been trying to make the super-all-in-one device, remember the PSP could play movies, music, photos, games, about the only thing they didn't cram in there was a phone, which the NGage tried to do and failed spectacularly at.

Everyone wants to make the all-in-one device, but the problem is that they tend to be jack of all trades, master of none. I don't care what kind of games you are making for the iOS or Android markets, they are wholly inferior to almost anything on dedicated mobile game platforms (DS/PSP).

Like smart phones can use GPS to navigate, but they aren't as good as a TomTom.
The PSP could play music, but its not as good as an iPod/ZUN
Almost all smart phones have cameras, but they are garbage compared to a dedicated digital camera
The taco could make phone calls, but it sucked compared to even a jitterbug

Just because you can shove more features into the case does not mean that you should...

producing a device that would truly be at least good at everything would probably cost more than all of the devices it would replace combined

I don't know why they added the touch screen to both sides, especially if you have 2 analog sticks already. It seems like sony just sorta threw in the touch screen so that they could say their device has it.

Well, what I'm more interested in is how anyone can get any practical use out a touch sensor (since there isn't actually a screen) on the the back of the thing. I mean, you're pretty much flying blind so all it will really be able to recognize are general gestures.

Sony Gross Revenue: 65 billion Euros
Nokia Revenue: 42.5 billion Euros

Sony Net Income: -321 million Euros
Nokia Net Income: 1.85 Billion Euros

Oh yes, because Nokia is so tiny, its such a tiny tiny firm compared to Sony  Tongue

At the time Nokia was not as large of a player in the US as Sony was, but it is not by any means a small company. It was just really over priced for a mobile gaming unit (even with a phone bundled) at $300, compared to the GBA/GBA-SP which were $100. The even larger problem being it only ever got like 50 titles. And a platform is only as strong as its library.

Sony on the other hand, is currently _losing_ money, while I have not read their most recent financial reports, nor do I want to go digging through them, I think we can agree that the PS3 is no PS2 in terms of money its brought in or market domination, and the PSP on the other had, got thoroughly trounced by DS, UMDs were a colossal failure both for movies and for games (spinning a disk tends to drain battery, really fast).

On the other hand, it did have some good games, was easily hacked, and in the end at the very least broke even. I don't think the 3DS will enjoy the same level of popularity that the DS did if it doesn't come down from a $250 price point fast, but if the PSP2 is going to launch at somewhere around $350 or more, its going going to end up playing second fiddle again.

I also believe that Sony has a standing agreement with Ericsson to make phones...

i know nokia's large, but it is almost exclusively a telecommunications company, whereas sony is involved in many more industries. also, i was careful to specify that the psp was well-known, not necessarily financially successful.

Gamestop priced it at $300. Not a reliable source but if it's true I think that's priced pretty competitively with 3DS considering the hardware gap.

I love my PSP and DS equally so I'm excited that we're seeing a bigger focus on handhelds now.

I wonder if the OLED screen'll give it some battery life parity with 3DS.

I want boooth but neither of them have games coming out for a long time that I'd wanna play. At least DS had Canvas Curse Sad
