I missed Pokemon and now is a decent time as ever to get a DS....thought I would answer that question before it arose.

The 580 is pretty pricey right now, you could probably save $150 bucks or so by switching to an older card without losing much power.

you only need the ID, once you have the ID you can just replace any public list's ID with your list's ID as long as your list has been set to public.

edit: whoops didn't see page 5.

thoughts:

G19 is completely unnecessary

reviews for that razer headset are mixed at best, and for $150...

i'd recommend a higher wattage PSU, i picked that 750W power supply for the original list, not the one i posted later. 1200W is easily overkill, but i'd also be very sure my computer could handle a second 580GTX later. for some reason, the 950W corsair PSU is cheaper than the 850W one, so whatever. you should only get this instead of the 1200W PSU if you're sure you won't SLI another 580GTX.

that case costs way too much for what you're getting, i'd say get an HAF X

i've really liked my samsung monitors, but if you like HP, w/e

if you effectively have 3k to spend on a computer, there's no reason not to get top of the line, karth

The problem I see with builds this expensive is that I'd say once the total cost gets over $1500, the ratio between price and performance rises dramatically. For example, it's $160 more to get the GTX580 versus the 570, and I doubt you're going to see any noticeable difference in graphics quality for a long time, especially with a single 1080p monitor. And as Versus said that case is way overpriced. It's fine to shoot for the absolute top-of-the-line stuff if you don't want to have to upgrade for as long as possible and if you have a lot of extra cash, but I personally think it's not worth the cost increase. Then again, I am a huge, HUGE cheapass, so feel free to disregard this.

Edit: Actually, looking over your most recent list, I think you're at pretty good spot in terms of getting your money's worth. It just seems higher because of the DS stuff and all the other accesories (chair, speakers, etc.).

what card would you suggest?

That's really up for you to decide, but as of right now, ATI seems to be on top of video cards. I'd do some snooping around on Tom's Hardware and see what you like.

Also, here's a combo for your proc and a motherboard that's not much different from yours:

The real question: why do you need the best? Just get an above average card that ISN'T $500.

This card is the highest in ATI's lineup: $370

top of the line consumer processor overclocked to 4+ ghz? let's get an "above average" vid card

seriously, this is a high end build. the real price difference (taking into account 60% discount) between that 6970 and the 580 GTX will be like $60 to him. it's nice to have top of the line once in a while.

oh wait everyone should play on hardware with the absolute best price to performance ratio even if we can afford to buy something nicer

So, the 6970 isn't top-of-the-line? It's likely that a card like the 580 would die before developers actually started to challenge it. Why overspend? There's no reason to.

Also, drop the 8 gigs of RAM to 4 gigs. If this is just a gaming rig, 8 gigs is serious overkill.

this is what i read

"580 GTX will die before you are unable to play a new game at high/max settings at 1920x1080"

"8GB of RAM is too much for a $2500 gaming computer"

karth you even played APB, too

to paraphrase what k2 said, above $1500, price:performance goes out the window

If he's going for maximum performance within a budget that high he shouldn't be getting a 580. Crossfire 6950's. They crush.

hmm

time to look at newegg's psu calc

edit: i'd think about getting a higher wattage PSU for dual 6950s, especially if he unlocks them to make them perform like 6970s, just to be on the safe side

You only need this if you're playing 10 instances of Minecraft at the same time, or work at Pixar. Maybe.

Drop to 750W on psu. Save on money AND the electric bill.  Big Grin

I agree with most of Karth's suggestions.

There are two things you should consider before you buy this
1. The things you spent on: Are you REALLY going to be using the devices to spend so much on them?
2. Are buying responsibly so you don't look at this action in six months/a year and facepalm for getting x parts?
3. It seems like you want to suck the life out of this future 'computer' until it is outdated. If that's it, you ARE going to something better during that comp's midlife. Don't think you wont.

TL;DR: Cut down on money so aren't calling today's you a total dumbass in a few months like I did when i built my compy with a micro atx.

EDIT: DAMMIT more posts.

My 4GB DDR2 handled APB, LIKE A BOSS. It was HORRIBLY optimized, you kidding me?

were you playing apb at 1024x768 or something? i distinctly remember surf saying he got a definite performance benefit going from 4GB to 8GB playing apb. i played apb with 6gb of RAM at lowest settings at 1776x1000 windowed.

btw, PSUs don't draw their full load constantly. they only draw what the computer is asking of it. the price difference WITHOUT the 60% discount between the corsair 750W and the corsair 950W is $40. spare capacity is better than straining your PSU.

edit: looking at your comp starknight, wtf are you doing trying to apply super budget build logic to a high end build?

does no one understand he is getting a $2500 computer for under $1500?
